Was he simply requested to put it out, or was he annoyed because he was fined/threatened with such? Also, I was always led to believe that you are unable to leave the station that your changing at with your ticket to prevent anyone paying less by booking a journey that is further, but getting off early (as ironic as that sounds, further often is cheaper).

He refused to put it out,

Seriously though i'm always going out of stations before my final stop for various reasons, you normally have to go through the barrier with the guy as it may not let you through the machine way but if you show them and just say your going for a fag or whatever i'm sure your be fine, i've never been questioned before.

Hmm.... I don't really think they'd prevent a paying customer from leaving the station... and if you explained that you wanted to go outside to have a smoke, someone would probably open the gate to let you out, then back in again.

Up in the real frozen north, where it's nice and frosty and meant to be snowing alot tomorrow not like the mild weathered edinburgh, it's not considered acceptable. No-one smokes on buses here, ever. I saw one guy light up at aberdeen train station a couple of weeks ago, he was immediately approached and told to leave.

I'm not a city type, I'm afraid; nor is Aberdeen train station anything short of a major one.

You could probably get away with it in a quiet bit of the station. It isn't enforced at all at my local station back in London, and I haven't seen anyone get in trouble for it.

I never said you were a city type.

Your location was, however, listed as Edinburgh.

Just dont do it OP :| take some nicotine gum if youre that desperate or else im sure the stations have made provisions or will let you out if you ask them!

what on earth would you do if you were taking a plane!

Reply 26

...maybe the OP should give up smoking? If it affects their life this much it can't be good ;-).

If I see someone smoking I tell them to stop -- it stinks, and the wind always blows the smoke around.

Reply 27

I've never been bothered for smoking on the station.

You'll just have to get one of these- http://www.iwantoneofthose.com/gamucci-micro-electronic-cigarette/index.html

You can "light up" anywhere, even on the train.

Hi I went to a rugby match the otha day, itwas heaving on the train wen i got off so stood on platform an lit up....enforcemant officer came over an told me id broke the law so i put it out. Then he reported me, i pleaded with him because i havnt been on a station for about 2years and didnt knw it was no smoking, and there were no signs in plainsight. He continued to tell me to phone the number on the card an id get a slap on the wrists or £10 fine. Phoned the number and explained and she said id be going to court if I didnt make a settlement offer of between £50 and £100... I am completly dumbstruck and dnt know wat to do can anybvody help me???

you obviously don't smoke, because you would know that 6 hours is a lifetime to a smoker. can you go 6 hours without a drink?

I find it sad that this is even an issue for someone

I smoke and I lit up a cigarette on the platform at Birmingham New Street a few years back because I didn't realise the rules (for anyone who remembers the old layout of Birmingham New Street...the platforms are essentially out in the open with little covering) and a worker politely asked me to put it out. I had no qualms. I haven't seen anybody else smoking at stations since then, to be honest.

smoking causes various health risks. please refrain.

That's not helpful 🤔 I'm pretty sure that's none of your business and not what they are asking. As a smoker myself I find it very annoying to have someone come up with this crap. It's like me saying oh I see you drink alcohol and breathe air please refrain from this one causes liver damage and the other causes lung cancer due to the pollution in the air 😒...

You’re admonishing someone for something they said 14 years ago.

They were right.

I didn't see the date, I am new here and also no they were not right. I always love when someone has never smoked or have given up smoking can assume it is easy to not smoke or need to. And anyway it had nothing to do with what the person was asking so therefore, their opinion on them smoking was not needed!
