Do junior doctors (specifically FY1) interact with Medical laboratory scientists and if so, how much do they interact? Also, are there any limitations about what junior doctors can request, do they need permission from their seniors?

Most don't.

Yes, there are limits. I wouldn't expect my FY1s to be requesting specialist neurological investigations without my / my registrar's instructions.

But I would expect them to request basic blood tests if the patients suddenly develop shortness of breath, for example.

Thank you. If FY1s request basic blood tests, do they have direct contact with the medical laboratory scientists or is it done through someone else? Like a nurse? And at what stage do junior doctors start interacting with MLSs on a daily basis? Is it when they start their ST1 training? Thank you again.

No, we are not in the 1950s where everything is done personally... Even 20 years ago we ask for blood tests with a request form.

These days, some places still use request forms but most trusts use a computer request. You order the tests on a computer and print off a label. The bloods are either taken to the lab by porters or sent via pods.

We don't need to speak to the lab directly to order tests unless it's urgent or specialised (quite rare), even then it's a telephone call and we wouldn't know who we spoke to.

Unless a doctor decides to specialise in a specialty that involves significant lab work e.g. Haematology, Clinical pathology etc. no junior doctor will interact with lab scientists on d daily basis.

Why are you asking? This is quite a strange question and it's definitely not something most doctors do.

Thank you for replying again, I really appreciate it. I was just planning a medical based story and I wanted to make it as accurate at possible. I couldn’t find any information about the interactions between MLSs and Junior doctors specifically so I asked here, and thank goodness I got an answer.
