Hey! Year 12 here.

I'd (preferably) like to do either something in publishing or secondary school (English) teaching for a career, but I'm not entirely certain yet. I'm quite interested in writing (novel writing and screenwriting in particular) for a career, which is my unrealistic ambition.

I'm thinking of looking into doing a joint degree in English lit and creative writing, but I'm not entirely sure what the creative writing aspect would be like solely based on looking at the course, or whether or not it would be worth it.

So, anyone who's more knowledgeable than me, what's it like doing a creative writing degree? Do you think it's worth doing one? Would you recommend/not recommend doing a joint degree in English lit and creative writing?

English literature is a very prestigious degree compared with creative writing although they are both phenomenal. I know this might not be much help to you right now but you should really think about what you enjoy. If you enjoy critical thinking English literature can definitely navigate you in that direction whilst if you prefer expressing your own individuality then creating writing would be the route to go. I would definitely look at university’s which offer those subjects as a joint degree however, another pathway you could consider is taking English literature ( it’s typically a stronger degree) and being part of a society/club that would help strengthen your creative writing. At this stage it might be an advantage to consider a MOOC to wider your knowledge on the degrees you’re interested in. Another fantastic way could be to enter numerous creative writing competitions and seeing if it’s for you.
