Pakistan has always been verging on 3rd world. It's obviously going to fall behind with its constant backwards laws, just like all other countries with Sharia law have. Why do you think they have been so massively over shadowed by India?

I doesn't have Shar'iah Law AND it's only around 60 years old. What dod you expect?
They're currently trying their best to overhaul the legal system but I think thye have more important things like the 50% literacy rate, terrorism, not to mention this whole corrupt A hole as president.

It might just be a correlation, i'm not 100% it would have to be true every time. I'm reading into it, it's quite interesting. Just looking at rape law in Pakistan; a woman was raped for marrying a higher caste, she went to court and there weren't 4 male witnesses to back her up so she's being stoned soon. Bloody ridiculous backwards hell hole, and they wonder why the international circle doesn't want to deal with them.

That's a) a rural case
b) that law now no longer exists thanks to the repeal fo the Hadood ordinances
c) 'and they wonder why the international circle doesn't want to deal with them.' Just because thye won't lie down and take it from theamericans who are sending strikes over the border blindly killing plenty of civilians as well as 'terrorists'. I don't think the tones v.good either e.g. if you don't join our completely idiotic War On Terror we'll bomb you back to the Stone Age

I certainly wouldn't set up a business there! The only reason they've had any real success of late is because they've been buffered by America in their war on terror.

see above point

Then explain to me why 80% of all imprisoned females in the country are there because they admitted to being raped?

Not Shar'iah- they're being released slowly, but surely.. see my point on the repeal of the Hadood Ordinances

Money means everything in Pakistan.
I hate the attitudes people have there.
They really need to be educated properly. It'd help.

You just described my stepmother. Quran wielding hypocrite.

Over and out:cool:

oops- to the OP
there are castes but they're not the same as in India, they normally tell you what jobs/ area of life ancestors were in- like Khan (i think) is businessman
there are others which mean landowner, performer, descendent of the Prophet (via the Mughals) etc. If you have an id card/passport it's listed ont here though I think nowadays in the cities it doesn't really matter anymore

Engineer and Merchant are both Indian surnames, so I'm guessing that's not a coincidence.

Secondly, that is more to do with the misogynistic nature of Asian society than it does with any law.

I would say it's more Middle Eastern culture rather than Asian society.

Indian society hardly gives more rights to women - the 'sati' ritual for example, and the less said about China the better.

These things don't only happen in Pakistan alone...it happens in the rest of South Asia in India, bangladesh, nepal etc... In india the sati ritual is banned by law but it still goes on in rural areas...

The law have been ammended...but saying that it is difficult to enforce it in certain areas (FATA specifically) because of it's hardline stance...but saying that it is an option available to them...

Attempting to reinforce a now completely disintegrated caste system would go against the very reason Pakistan was created! The most you should need to know is that you are (presumably) Muslims, and that in Islam all people are one and equal!
I myself am of the highest 'caste' of Pakistan but I am not necessarily proud of my royal descent. I have put it behind me, and so should you all.

Yes, I completely agree. Pakistan was created so that it could be different, so that Muslims could live freely without inequality and without the danger that one day they would be treated like the Jews of Germany.

Pakistan Zindabad! May you see brighter days to come, days when our dear Muhammad Ali Jinnah's dreams of Pakistan being the best country in the world come true!

Oooh really?? you may wish to stay as far away from my stepmother as possible.. always on the lookout for a good catch for her (reluctant and embarassed) daughter!1
I agree though it's stupid- she stopped talking to her niece when her niece fell in love with someone from a 'lower down' caste *shock* *horror*

I'm from Pakistan, there's no way you can call the differences "small"

Mainly, the caste system places restrictions on how people can spend their lives. People aren't allowed to marry outside of their caste, and many schools/colleges have quotas for each caste. Jobs are even restricted based on caste.

Well they were... like several hundred years ago!

The caste system plays a part in people's thinking just as race and gender does in the UK, but as far as opportunities go, it carries absolutely no weight today.

It's like the feudal system of government this country had donkeys years ago. :yep:

Yes. Caste systems are a ridiculous, silly, pathetic little idea that we unfortunately brought into Pakistan with us during the partition.

But Pakistan is facing so many hardships currently. And as Islam teaches, after every hardship there comes ease. So perhaps in the better times to come, we will be able to completely eliminate the remaining caste system and all other silly little cultural beliefs from our country.

Im incredibly confused! As previously mentioned, I thought the caste system originated from hindu culture and is therefore only present in india? Can someone please enlighten this confused Pakistani? Thanks lol.

OP, after reading this thread, so much utter crap has been posted, I say in all honestly.

You should read a page on wikipedia about the caste system and the beliefs and history behind it for a general gist, however as any academic studying it will tell you, it's a culture in its own right that takes lifetimes and generations to understand! I've spend years in India and I think I've just scratched the surface of how the caste system has a part in Indian society.

Don't let anybody tell you it's simple, or try to explain it on one paragraph!

Haha no problem. Yes, you are right, the caste system is an Indian thing. But do not forget that the Pakistanis were Indians before they were Pakistanis, and even after the partition, the Pakistanis did not successfully manage to let go of the petty and pathetic little cultural beliefs that they had developed whilst living as Indians.

Yeah thats probably the best idea. The wikipedia article does look rather daunting though...
