Should we apply for maintenance loan for son if we can afford to fund him ourselves?

First, please do not pile in on me - I am well aware that this is a very middle-class question and not the situation many students are in! However, my husband wants to pay for our son's rent/living costs so that he doesn't have to take out a maintenance loan (in addition to his tuition fee loan). However, while I appreciate the sentiment, surely that is a bad idea - son will get some loan (about 50% of maximum I think as its means-tested) and he won't have to pay it back unless and until he earns above a certain threshold? What do other parents/students advise please?

Maintenance loan is primarily for accommodation (the greatest cost) and living costs? Tuition fee loan (which we are applying for) is education. Transport not an issue as applying for campus unis.... Sorry if I am missing something here.
