Shall I do Digital Marketing Degree or a I.T degree

I need some help I like both but not sure which one to do. I don't think Marketing pays as much as jobs in I.t. but not sure

I think I.T may be a more beneficial degree. The thing is, if you want to do marketing it would be better to gain actual work experience. The reason why I think an I.T degree is better is because it has transferable analytical skills, whereas the information you gain from a marketing degree will be more soft-skill based which you would gain from an actual workplace environment anyway.

Well, if the main reason for choosing IT is a salary, but marketing is more interesting for you, then you can study marketing and work in an IT company. My friend is doing what he loves (marketing) and at the same time the salary is at the IT level:smile:

Hi there,
Choosing between marketing and IT depends on your interests and career goals. While IT jobs often offer higher starting salaries, marketing can also be lucrative, especially in digital marketing roles. Consider what you enjoy more and where you see yourself in the long term. Both fields have good opportunities for growth.
Best of luck with your decision!

It depends on your career goals. If you enjoy creativity, branding, and online growth, a Digital Marketing degree is a great choice. If you prefer technical problem-solving, programming, and systems, an IT degree might suit you better. Both have strong job prospects, so choose based on your interests and long-term goals.

To be honest, you dont really need a Fancy degree to work in Marketing, you can work in Marketing while studying IT, that way you have experience and skills in both sectors, making it easier for you to switch, also tons of free online courses you can do to gain base level marketing knowledge and apply for starter level jobs. Google Digital Garage is a great way to start.

Hi @Neverused. I studied a Digital Marketing degree myself. I would say the marketing field has a lot of job prospects. It depends what you more passionate about, I would say both offer a good salary but again its about what your more interested in. They both differ quite a lot in terms of main duties and responsibilities. I.T would involve a lot of tech and software use, whereas marketing is more creative and you would be designing and creating etc. You can read about my time studying Digital Marketing here . Feel free to ask any questions! I would be more than happy to help.😀

When deciding between a Digital Marketing degree and an IT degree, I think it depends on career goals. If the aim is to work in marketing, social media, SEO, and online business growth, a digital marketing degree is more aligned with current industry demand. IT degrees focus more on programming, software, and tech infrastructure, which suits different career paths. To strengthen practical skills in digital marketing, a program like the Digital Marketing Course from IIM SKILLS is very useful. It offers one-on-one mentorship, a two-month internship, job placement support, and an industry-recognized certification, providing hands-on experience for a strong marketing career.

Hiya! Hopefully the following can help
The choice between pursuing a Digital Marketing degree (typically offered through our Business School) and an I.T. degree (such as Computer Science from our School of Electronics and Computer Science) should be guided by your ultimate professional interests and strengths.

Digital Marketing Degree: This programme focuses on the strategic and commercial application of technology. Graduates master consumer behaviour, advanced analytics (SEO/PPC), branding, and data-driven strategy to effectively engage customers and drive business growth. This is the optimal route if you excel at communication, creative problem-solving, and strategic business leadership.

I.T. Degree: This path is rooted in the technical foundation and logic of modern computing. The curriculum emphasizes core skills in programming, network architecture, data structures, and cybersecurity. It is the appropriate choice if you have a strong aptitude for analytical thinking, logical systems design, and building software or hardware solutions.

In essence, your decision hinges on whether your passion lies in the business use and strategy of digital technology or the technical build and architecture of computing systems. Both qualifications from Southampton are highly valued in the contemporary job market.
