I've gotten BBBC (Math, IT, Chem, Phy, respectively) in my A Levels and want to know the best universities I should apply to with the given grades for Computer Science. I know it's not a lot, but what's the best I can get with these?

Hi NOTDHRUVIL,

Sorry to jump in here but I hope the application/choosing process for university is going ok, I know it can be a stressful time! I also wanted to say congratulations on your grades, they are brilliant!! (As someone who also did Maths, Chemistry and Physics I am in awe of anyone who finished the a-level at all never mind what grades you got.)

McGinger is absolutely correct in that we offer computer science at BBB for people with your mix of subjects (you actually have more than one preferred subjects for this course!) If you wanted to check it out more you can have a look at the course content here on our website. https://www.qub.ac.uk/courses/underg...c-g400/#course.

Just a bit of shameless promotion here in that we are a top 50 University in the world (Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2021) and within the top 200 Universities for Computer Science in the world (Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020). We are also one of 24 Russell Group Universities in the UK which means we are a world class research based campus.

Also given the high demand for Computer Science students we have 15-20 scholarships available for students which can be worth up to £25,000, which is starting to make me think I am in the wrong degree...

If you wanted to come out and visit us then we would be delighted to see you and you can book a campus tour using the link here https://www.qub.ac.uk/about/Visit-Us/ this is entirely free and is absolutely the best way to see the University!

On another note, it is so important that you go somewhere you are happy, doing something you enjoy so if you have any questions at all, either about Queen's or University life in general then feel free to ask. I remember picking where I wanted to go was a really tough decision because there are so many great options.

Best of luck with everything!

Hey! Thanks for this. I was looking through the course and was wondering if the placement year is compulsory for all computer science students(who aren't taking mathematics)?

Hi NOTDHRUVIL,

From my understanding that is how our Computer Science degree is run with the year out in industry for third year. I don't know how flexibility works on this (if there is any) but if you drop the department an email I am sure they will get back to you on that - [email protected].

I don't know if you've had time to explore our website but we also offer a three year BSc in Computer Engineering which I think you should look at. This doesn't have a placement year and is under the same department if you wanted to ask about that too. The grades are ABB for this one but I wouldn't let that put you off applying or at least asking them if you are interested!

Best of luck with everything,

I cannot comment on the others but I do know that Swansea has very good industry links,

Computer Science is held in the new computational foundry which it shares with Mathematics. They are based on the new Engineering and Business campus opened in 2015 which is apparently the biggest university development in the last 10 years in Europe.
