someone please help me, ive got this one question to finish my assignment and I am really struggling to wrap my head round it to write something down. It is wordy but would really appreciate the help, TIA


  1. At room temperature chlorine is a gas and iodine is a solid. When heated together, chlorine reacts with iodine to form iodine monochloride ICl. ICl has a higher boiling point than Cl2. Explain in terms of the bond polarity arising from electronegativity and intermolecular forces present, why ICl has a higher boiling point than Cl2 and why iodine is solid at room temperature whereas Cl2 is gaseous.

Cl has permanent dipole interactions whereas Cl2 has van der Waals’ forces. The forces are stronger in ICl thus more energy is needed to overcome forces in ICl than in Cl2.
