RAF Air Ops Systems or Control?

Hi all,
I just wanted some advice on the differences between air ops control and air ops systems in the way of careers, opportunities, deployment, etc.

I recently joined the Reserves in ASOS (FOA) and now awaiting to complete phase 1 p2, but I've always wanted to join full time. I applied two years ago for air ops control officer and got through CBAT but my medical slowed things down and then Covid struck which derailed my application concerning the medical issue. I'm now considering applying full time as I'm 37 and time feels like it's ebbing away far too fast...

I'm unsure as to which branch to go into and what the differences really are. I've looked on the site and I'm still unsure as to which to go for, and whether I should try and go for officer, sergeant or ac. Any advice or experience with this would be much appreciated, thanks. H.
Air Ops Control are split into Air Traffic Controllers and Fighter Controllers - over time the roles will merge to allow postings between both.

ATC do what you’d expect control air traffic to and from mil airfields. They also control at NATS Swanwick in the upper air to facilitate the transit of mil aircraft across the U.K. FIR,

Fighter Controllers are more combat focused usually controlling closer to operations or in defence of the U.K. Day to day they work at Boulmer on shifts controlling fast jets, tankers and istar assets.

Air Ops systems is split into flight ops and identification officer.

Flight ops basically do all the aviation admin / organisation that comes with maintaining operations at a station, on ops or on a flying squadron.

IDO watch the U.K. air picture to identity possible air threats. They’ll point out this threat, try to identify and if not they’ll raise it which may eventually lead to QRA intercept via fighter controllers.

That’s a very quick lamens term summary - if you have any specific questions let me know. Officer / Sgt depends what you want in your career. Officer is more admin / management and as you get promoted you’ll move further and further from your specialisation into general command. Sgt you’re more likely to build experience in your role and become an SME in that area.

Hi, RAF Adam was an official RAF recruiter account, but they haven’t been active on TSR since Nov 2022, and to the best of my knowledge no one else has taken over the role since then. I’m sorry I can’t answer your query as my limited knowledge of the branch was when they were known as Fighter Controllers. All I can suggest is that you speak to your local AFCO or your recruitment point of contact (if you’re in the process) and ask them about being put in touch with the relevant liaison team ( if indeed they still exist).

Best of luck
