Hi there, it's great to hear you are interested in fashion or costume design! I am a second year fashion design student at the University of Southampton so I can definitely tell you about what the course involves
We do a variety of projects including drawing, digital skills, technical sewing skills and mainly designing and making garments. Usually, we would start with a brief and do our own research to begin coming up with ideas for a collection. We would then keep drawing, researching and narrowing down choices for fabric and shape until we have a suitable selection of final outfits. We then go through the full process of making a garment or outfit from scratch, using sewing skills and techniques we learn along the way on the course. On our course, you can chose to do either womenswear or menswear but there are some universities that also offer sportswear pathways if this is of interest!
At Winchester School of Art (the UoS art campus) the entry requirements for the course are 3 B's at A level, or a pass from an Art Foundation course which you can do after A levels if you wish to. Specific A level subjects aren't asked for but most people have done either textiles or fine art at A-level, or an art foundation year. These subjects are just naturally beneficial as you will learn more of the skills needed to do fashion design, so I would definitely recommend looking into your options for similar A-levels.

However, other universities may ask for different variations on this so it would be a good idea to take a look at the entry requirements on courses at any specific university you like!
Do you have a specific area in fashion and costume design you are most interested in?
