Hello world!

International student here. Studying my second bachelor.

I'm having a hard time deciding which uni to go for music production. The two important variables I'm considering are:
Respected uni - Located in a city with professional opportunities

If you had to pick 5, which ones will you pick:
1. London College of Music - Performance and Recording
2. University of Surrey - Creative Music Technology
3. Guildhall School of Music and Drama - Popular Music Production
4. Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts - Music Songwriting & Production
5. University of Winchester - Music and Sound Production
6. University of Staffordshire - Music Production
7. University of Salford - Popular Music & Recording
8. Leeds Conservatoire - Music (Production)
9. University of York - Music and Sound Recording
10. University of Kent - Music Business and Production
11. Institute of Contemporary Music Performance - Creative Music Production
12. School of Audio Engineering (SAE) - Audio Production
13. Birmingham City University - Popular Music
14. Goldsmith University - Popular Music
15. University of Huddersfield - Creative Music Production
16. University of the Arts London - Music Production

Hope you can give me a hand here!!!

You might get more response if you changed your title to not say "schools", which in the UK are where children are educated. You're looking for advice on universities.

Hi there,

I can totally understand your dilemma as I went through the same thing when I was deciding on a university to attend. It's great that you already know the fields you're interested in as that narrows it down quite a bit. It helped me to then decide what cities I wanted to attend university in. I found that university experience and performance is not just determined by the university itself but the surrounding area as that is a 3-4yr commitment. It might also be useful for you to work up a 'priority list' for your dream university including factors such as tuition fees, the cost of living, ranking, distance from home, campus-style, proximity to a city centre, surrounding area, diversity, job prospects, networking opportunities, course modules, student-staff ratio, etc.

Here are some useful links to compare university degrees:

And once you've narrowed it down and utilized tools such as UCAS, you can always head over to the specific university websites and look over the course outline and modules as well as the learning, teaching and assessment information to see what best suits you.

I hope this has helped

Joao

I go to leeds conservatoire, for classical not production, but I can tell you it's a really good uni for production and popular music in general, especially if you're wanting to mix with other musicians and go to lots of concerts. It's a great city and just a really interesting place to be.

Hi liankyla!

I ended up getting offers from:
1. Leeds Conservatoire - Music (Production)
2. Goldsmith University - Popular Music
3. University of York. - Music and Sound Recording
4. University of Salford - Popular Music & Recording
5. Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts - Music Songwriting & Production
6. London College of Music - Recording, Mixing and Production

I am still making up my mind on which one to go, but since I don't live in the UK I am a little confused. Which one would you recommend?

Kind regards!,
Daniel

Hi akxkis!

I read some bad things about Pointblank and SAE. That's why I didn't end up applying there :/ But mostly because I wanted to attend to a bigger institution such as a university or conservatoire.

Hi pumilio,

That sounds great!! I got an offer from them and its within my top choices. But a lot of people keep telling me that living in London is a huge advantage, specially if I want to make connections on the music business. Is that true?

Hi goodguydan95!

Amazing news that you've got an offer from so many universities - congratulations! London can be a good advantage for the music industry with it being so big and well established in most genres, but depending on what kind of music you like Manchester has a fab music scene! Loads of live mic nights, indie bars and good vibes to be had up North, but maybe we're a little biased by our love for the city!

Let me know if you have any queries - always happy to help!
