I used to go to Plym Uni but I did Criminology so I don't know much about Marine Biology (although I've heard it's good) but I know quite a bit about the student life and I'm happy to answer questions if it helps

From my experience I really enjoyed the nightlife and there are quite a few places to go. Out of the nightclubs, I used to go to Fever and Pryzm occasionally and the entry from what I remember is less than £5. The Student Union also do nightclub nights on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, again the entry is really cheap and the SU do cheap drinks on club nights as well compared to other places (2 VKs for £5.50, 5 for £10 on Jaegerbombs or Firebombs which is like a Jaegerbomb but with Tennessee fire instead of Jaeger and deals on shots as well, I used to be a bartender there although prices may have changed since then).

As for tips and tricks, I would say join clubs and societies that you're interested in as they will also have sponsorship deals. There is a marine biology society that has events to do with marine bio such as talks from what I've heard. They also do sober and alcohol socials so there is something for everyone (a sober one would be something like a sea swim and an alcohol one would be a night out). If you're doing marine bio and are interested in the HSE scuba side then I would recommend joining the scuba society as they have discounts on the pre requisite courses which I've heard are really useful. If you have any interests outside of your course then I would recommend joining a club or society to do with that interest (I used to be committee for Stand Up Paddleboarding but they are no longer active due to lack of committee) or set something up if there currently isn't anything.

The Students' Union also hosts several events throughout the year such as when the 6 nations is on, the football final, superbowl, oktoberfest, St Patrick's Day and a few others so there is a lot going on.

There are also quite a few beaches either in Plymouth (there is one by the *** I used to always go to) or around and you've got Cornwall really near as well. I'd recommend bringing a wetsuit to uni because they are really useful for going in the sea (I got one when I was in Plymouth) I'd also recommend bringing a dry bag so that you can dry a wetsuit in your room without leaving a lot of water (this also would stop you being tempted to dry a wetsuit over the communal balcony in Robbins as some people have lost theirs that way). I once had to keep a friend's surfboard under my bed and then put it in a family member's hotel room whilst he was away due to the easter room inspections (but they only happen once a year)

As for accommodation, I would recommend staying in the uni managed halls as even though they might be more expensive than some private halls, they have quite a few social events throughout the year (although the social events vary year to year). When I stayed in halls, events included a movie night, waffle event, trip to Paignton Zoo and trip to Retallack Aquapark although other years have done things like walks in different places, sea swimming, beach cleans and a few others. The uni managed halls also have bicycle storage and watersports equipment storage (these are extra charges so if you have a bike then pay for the storage and people, including me, keep their watersports stuff in their room). There is also laundry facilities nearby which either require a code or usage of your keyfob to get in and payment for laundry is through an app which you put money on (laundry for me was £3.50 so I used to put £7 on the app so it would clear out after 2 washes). I'd recommend setting a timer on your phone whilst you do laundry so you know when it's done and don't hog a machine. There are also shops nearby the uni managed accomodation as well such as coop, Sainsbury's and Tesco (Asda and Morrisons are a car journey away) as well as the Drake Circus shopping centre.

I can't think of any more things at the moment but if you have any questions then let me know

Hey Ewan,

That's great to hear - Plymouth is the perfect location for those courses. What made you choose that selection? Let me know if you need any help deciding!

Hi, did you start the course at Plymouth? How is it?

Hi there! 🙂

I'm a current second year Zoology student here at the university but have friends in marine biology and oceanography/ocean sciences/coastal ecology, so I know a fair bit about the courses.

I really love it here because the city is really student-friendly and the university's location is great, particularly next to the National Marine Park- perfect for ocean courses and those who enjoy spending time by the sea! The course and facilities are great, especially the university marine station in the harbour allowing experience with specialist technology and gaining practical skills on the water.

If you have any question about courses, the university, or Plymouth in general feel free to reach out! We also have students available to chat to from different courses on Unibuddy!

Best of luck! 😀
