One person has died today from Omicron variant of Covid

Boris Johnson needs to be acting on this and address the situation. Ban gatherings and bring back covid legislation for those who breach it.

We can't have another lockdown and have people dying all over again from Covid. It's too much.

Agree with you on this.

Boris been to slow since day one of this covid19 virus.
Now the English will see why rest of UK devolved governments did what they did themselves about covid19.
Boris hesitated doing things few weeks back when others UK devolved governments did something about it.

All Boris can say is get your vaccine as it will help but look at the UK daily figures increasing with cases plus hospitalisation and ICU beds refilling up again.

Maybe a lot tighter restrictions is required like only going out for work / school / college or university / shops etc etc between certain times of the day and stop mass gatherings and big sporting crowds ( although they keep saying it safe outside ). If it's safe outside then how come the virus managing to spread like wildflower...!! Testing more as well.

The government and their medical advisers are acting on the rise in infection levels and deaths connected with the Omicron variant.
People are being advised to work from home if they can to slow down transmission levels and vaccine boosters are being recommended.

Banning all large scale social gatherings in private premises & compelling the closure of clubs, football stadiums, non-essential shops, pubs, bars and restaurants so close to Christmas would come within mm's of inviting a no confidence motion to be submitted the 1922 committee.
Also be most likely to infuriate large swathes of the english electorate and business community, risking creating a social climate ripe for Labour to gain significant support for making a no confidence motion before March 2022.

Somebody died of a flu. The absolute horror.

Seems like a completely reasonable excuse to overturn our society again.

If Mr Johnson was prepared to engage with other political parties in a sensible way as Winston Churchill did, then the views of some of his backbenchers would not be so important that he bows down to them largely.

If the face coverings law and social distancing had been kept, and the plan for vaccine certification started in late September as originally planned, I expect we would be in a much better position and additional restrictions in January might not be needed.

Just one point.
On the BBC website yesterday it says the first person had died with the new variant, not of the new variant.

Poster above beat me too it. Reports suggest the died with it, not of it, and that’s a massive massive difference. Could have been hit by a car.

True. But given covid causes an immune response where the body effectively attacks itself you could always argue about cause of death. For example, if your lungs get infected with covid that leads to pneumonia and you die, was the cause of death pneumonia or covid?
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-51214864

Hence the term - died with covid.

My friends mother had a stroke and died two days later in hospital. She was put down as death by Covid even though she had no symptoms and they only knew she had Covid because as with every body, she was tested upon admission.

Killer flu outbreak is to blame for a 42% spike in deaths in January after 64,000 people died - the highest number since records began

64k + people died of flu in 2018

Look at the map of infection levels and you will see it is lower in most of Scotland. How it got there, most likely someone returning from a trip to family. Spread at a large gathering, a Steps concert.

We'll see how badly the NHS and access to treatments will get. We've got almost 100,000 daily cases today, wonder how next week's hospitalization rates will be.

FYI it's not from anybody from coming back from holidays as that been confirmed by the government here, they blaming it through airborne with winds blowing it in.
Look at the larger events like football & other related big events. Surprised not much came from the recent Climate Conference in Glasgow with cases of covid19, same with hosting big European football events in summer.

How are all the football games being cancelled in England with teams being affected & also starting to hit other sporting events to.

Numbers are rising daily in scotland as now the Omicron virus is dominant now over delta one as similar in rest of UK.

Looks like another lockdown or some sort of major restrictions coming in next few days as UK governments are talking about it over the weekend.

NHS can't cope now never mind another big rise in hospital numbers with it,
Obviously treatments from other departments will be stopped again to concertrate on covid19 patients as numbers will continue to rise over coming days and weeks ahead.

I seen how bad it was last year with all the home births cases being diverted to hospital maternity units but not got the extra staff to help with the near doubling of patients plus not enough beds to deal with things.... But had to get on with it.

The NHS are relying on the extra staff from students to assist with it and any newly qualified staff taken on.
