how structure of mitochondria enables respiration

Inner membrane - contains ETC and ATP synthase for oxidative phosphorylation

The question is just: Explain how the structure of mitochondria enables respiration

I sort of understand structure and function of mitochondria but when it says enables respiration what do i need to put?
