Marketing or digital marketing

Is a digital marketing degree preferred over a marketing degree? If I were to do a marketing degree would I still be able to do the same things as someone who has taken digital marketing? Would they be preferred if there was a job that wanted social media marketing ? Am so sorry that I’ve just put a bunch of questions but I’ve been thinking about what the difference is and articles online aren’t that much help!

Digital marketing is pretty hot amongst employers. Most businesses are going digital so it’s a great degree to earn. You’ll probably have elements of general marketing in your degree as well. Also, many general marketing courses allow you to specialise in digital university of Birmingham certainly has this type of specialisation.

You can work in any field of marketing because you’ll learn most things on the job and not in college! But yes, to sum up, you can do digital marketing and still work in general marketing.

If I were to take a normal marketing degree would I still be able to do the same things as a digital marketing degree? Since I want to stay in London there aren’t that much digital marketing courses that universities are offering

Well…it really depends on the degree. Different unis offer different sets of courses. What you “can” do depends on your choice of modules, extra modules/online courses, internships, part time work and first job. You steer your career the way you like.

If you are looking at a local business trying to target an older demographic in a specific geographic area, traditional marketing might be more effective.
If you are looking at e-commerce business targeting a global audience, digital marketing is likely more suitable.

Most modern businesses employ a mix of both to optimize their reach and engagement. It's not so much a matter of one being better than the other, but rather understanding which is more appropriate for a specific goal, audience, or situation.

Hello 😊

I've just submitted my dissertation as part of my Digital Marketing and Channel Management MSc at the University of Surrey and my entire higher education path has been with marketing.

From experience, the biggest difference between a marketing degree and a digital marketing one is how broad and narrow each one is. A marketing degree oversees the entirety of the marketing field, which is extremely broad as it covers sales, strategies, research and other areas, while a digital marketing degree is more specific and narrow.

A marketing degree offers a broader knowledge of all marketing areas, which is extremely beneficial, and you would still cover digital marketing because is an extremely popular area nowadays. However, it wouldn't be as specific and in-depth as a digital marketing degree. Personally, I got a narrow undergrad degree in communications and worked my way up to marketing and digital marketing with postgrad degrees.

If you want to specifically pursue a social media marketing job, I would advise getting a digital marketing degree, as you would have a deeper social media knowledge.

Hope this made sense and it helps,
Jénifer

When deciding between traditional marketing and digital marketing, I think digital marketing has a stronger edge in today’s world. While traditional marketing focuses on offline strategies like print, TV, and events, digital marketing deals with social media, SEO, Google Ads, and online campaigns, which are in high demand across industries. To build practical expertise, a professional program like the Digital Marketing Course from IIM SKILLS is very valuable. It offers one-on-one mentorship, a two-month internship, job placement support, and an industry-recognized certification, helping to develop the skills needed to succeed and grow in the rapidly expanding digital marketing field.

Hi there,

That’s a really good set of questions, and you’re definitely not alone in wondering about the difference between a Marketing degree and a Digital Marketing degree. At London South Bank University (LSBU), we offer both types of courses, including the BA (Hons) Marketing with Advertising and Digital Communications and the BSc (Hons) Marketing with Digital, so you’ll have options depending on what kind of focus you want.

A Marketing degree gives you a broad understanding of the whole field. You’ll study consumer behaviour, branding, market research, advertising, and strategy, basically how businesses connect with customers and build their reputation. You’ll still learn about digital marketing as part of the course, since social media, SEO, and online campaigns are now central to the industry. This means that even with a general marketing degree, you can still go into jobs that focus on digital or social media marketing, employers often value the broader perspective you gain from studying all areas of marketing.

A Digital Marketing degree, on the other hand, goes deeper into the online and data-driven side of marketing. You’ll focus more on topics like social media management, analytics, e-commerce, and digital advertising platforms. It’s a great choice if you already know you want to specialise in online marketing from the start.

In terms of job opportunities, neither degree limits you, what matters most is your skills, creativity, and experience. A general marketing graduate can easily work in digital roles, and many people move between traditional and digital marketing throughout their careers. Employers look for people who understand both the strategic side and the technical tools and both LSBU degrees help you develop exactly that.

Studying marketing at LSBU also means you’ll be based in central London, surrounded by creative agencies and major brands, giving you great opportunities for internships, placements, and networking.

If you’re still deciding, I’d recommend attending our Open Day on Saturday the 15th of November to speak with lecturers and students from both courses. They can show you the modules, explain the differences, and help you figure out which route best fits your career goals.

👉 You can sign up here: LSBU Open Day.
👉 You can also chat with our students through our Unibuddy platform: Chat with our students.

Whichever you choose, LSBU will give you the practical skills and industry connections to succeed in marketing, whether that’s in digital media, branding, or advertising.
