Do UCAS contact your references??

I recently submitted my UCAS application (mature student aged 23!) and a friend of mine at work agreed to me writing my own reference and putting her name to it. Strictly speaking she is more of a friend than an employer (which I know is very naughty, slap slap) and she is in a position above me, although I don't report to her. My question is - do UCAS or unis contact references?? I was pretty basic with it and only put stuff in that had been said about me during appraisals and stuff - I had asked my own line manager to write it but she forgot and then went on hols leaving me with a UCAS deadline and no reference! Help!!
I think they rarely contact for references. You already have the reference written on the UCAS form anyway.

I vaguely seem to remember someone saying that they check 10% of UCAS applicant references, but I may have made that up.

I was fairly close to doing almost exactly the same thing myself.
Why do UCAS call you about your references? Most of the time the referee writes them though.

I am an international and by friend also applied to Medical school with me.
Both our references were called to verifiy what was written on the form was accurate.

i would imagine they are a lot more stringent with medical applications and with international students. Being both probalby makes you a prime target for being checked
I don't think people should make up teacher references, as when you are at uni and you don't do well and stuff that are related to the teacher's reference, for sure, you are lying.

I'm assuming it's not made up, but you're worried that they'll ring up and she'll not know what you wrote.

If it was on the computer, why not print off a copy for her to have a look at, so she knows what to say if she gets UCAS on her back?
i thought the universities look at it not ucas
ucas has the responsibility to check that information given on the form is accurate

UCAS never called, the UNIVERSITY admissions did.

I didn't lie as such - nothing said in it was untrue and I certainly didn't make it sound like I was fantastic when I'm not. My issue is that she's a friend more than an employment reference and if something comes through at work in the post for her that she may get in trouble for writing a reference for me when I don't report to her as such.

Do they write or call?
I think they call.

I was about to post the same thing. Uni Depts will check X% of references as a sample audit.
