You study the main disciplines of education i.e. psychology, philosophy, sociology and history. The course also covers elements of linguistics and pretty much everything and anything else you could think of.

The drama side is limited - there is a practical element but this is very, very small.

I took my A-levels in 2012 and achieved 4 a*s (English Lit, Psychology, Geography and Law). I gained 4 As at AS-level and was predicted 2 A*s (Law and English) and 2 As at the time I applied.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for your response. Could you explain a bit more about those aspects of education?

Subjects are largely unimportant for Education. I got in with Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Psychology. Your subject choice is more important for your partner subject - the admissions tutors/DoS for your partner subject have to believe that you're as capable as any applicant applying for that course (e.e. English).

Edit: To add to the above, I got (and was predicted) 4A*s and got 6As at AS with 97% across my top 3. However, most people get in with lower grades than that.

Well done!
Do you enjoy the education course?

I do, despite the fact I'm thinking of switching to Natural Sciences for next year. It's a great degree that allows you to do a huge range of subjects, and is nicely set up for independent learning - it varies with colleges, but I could do as much or as little as I felt necessary. If I wanted extra essays and supervisions, I could have had/done them. It was just what I needed for this year, but the reason I'm moving onto Natural Sciences is because I'm more ready now to select a single subject than I was in Sixth Form.

The easiest way to learn about the disciplines of education is to read a bit about them, but you might not have the time to read a lot and introductory textbooks are rather dull. They are essentially those disciplines as they apply to education.

Psychology covers topics like relationships, emotional and cognitive development, intelligence, etc. It's very similar to a Developmental Psychology module.

Philosophy is often about exploring debates in education such as what to teach, who to teach, what the goals of education are.

Sociology studies aspects of educational difference and inequality (e.g. along lines of race, gender, class) as well as how education fits into society.

History does exactly what you think it does - it looks at the changes in education over time, and in Cambridge has a particular focus on British, especially English, education (at least in first year).

Cool, which college?

In terms of workload, it's fairly evenly split. The science has much more contact time - more lectures, supervisions and of course practicals which Education doesn't have. This means that you could get away with doing less work in Education, but it would come back to haunt you come exam time. The work is also very different. Science is made up of mostly problem sheets with fairly short answer questions, whereas the work you give to your Education supervisors is all essays. You can specialise more in the later years - in 2nd year, it's 2 papers from Education, 2 from Subject Studies and 1 from either. In 3rd year I think it's 2 Education papers (including a dissertation) and then 3 from either Education or Subject Studies.

thank you! Homerton

I have an unconditional deferred offer for Education with MML (french) for 2015

II'm only applying to Cambridge this year, I'm not going to use the optional 1200 characters in the SAQ, but will write in extra info such as how I have followed my interests outside of academia in the relevant sections of course. Has anyone else not filled in the second PS? Any advice? I know Cambridge say you won't be at a disadvantage through this, but I still feel nervous leaving it blank...

I'm applying for education with mml at cambridge but elsewhere just for modern languages. I therefore really need the saq to talk specifically about the education course because my main personal statement is just focused on languages!

What made you decide to apply only for cambridge this year?

Yay that's my course! I have deferred entry for 2015  what college/language? I was the opposite, applied for education elsewhere and only Cambridge (Homerton) for education with MML (French) Good luck!! X

I am making an open application. What was your interview like? I'm mostly worried about speaking in the target language (spanish) because I tend to get flustered and mess up!

My education interview was really nice and friendly, but my French one was a bit of a nightmare...they started off in English and asked me a question linking two seemingly unrelated aspects of my PS. Then we switched to French and I didn't understand all of their questions  but I managed to work it out eventually - they're not trying to trick you, they just want to know how you figure things out. Try not to panic as its really not that bad - it's meant to be hard (I think!) but not impossible  you're not expected to know all the answers, just try your best x

I was going to apply after my grades as I thought I had 0 chance, however after speaking to my tutor about my extenuating circumstances and hearing about other peoples experiences I've decided to give it a shot- (my lack of confidence was holding me back I suppose) Cambridge is definitely my first choice, If it doesn't work out this year, I'll just re-apply next year (with more options, as I previously planned)

Do personal statements have to have a balance between education and your chosen subject? What if you were not applying to any other education type degree at any other university? I have a lot of extra curricular activities relating to primary type education, would this be enough to add or would I need any other bits where I talk about my desire to study education as you do your standard subject?

Cambridge allow you to do an 'extra' PS when you submit the SAQ (big long form you do online) so you could probably talk about education in that, and just talk about it a little bit in your main PS, if that makes any sense!
anyone hear from Homerton this term?

Yes, glancing at the applicants thread it seems Homerton sent their replies later than many other colleges. I got an interview offer for Education and MML  How about you?
