At the start of the play, Lady Macbeth clearly has the upper hand & overpowers her husband. Look at her monologue — quotes such as ‘unsex me here’, ‘look like th’innocent flower but be the serpent under’t’ and ‘take my milk for gall’ suggest that Lady Macbeth wishes to possess a masculine power & play the typically ‘male’ role in her relationship. She’s also clearly manipulative — take a look at her response to Macbeth in the Banquet Scene (just after he sees Banquo’s ghost).
In each paragraph of your essay your most important job is to discuss how her power has shifted from that initial masculine hunger to something much weaker and more unstable. For reference, look at Lady Macbeth’s final lines before her death. Phrases such as ‘out, damned spot’ and ‘all the perfumes of Arabia could not sweeten this little hand’ (and even her little interruptions of ‘oh, oh!’) highlight her loss of power and new sense of instability.
