You don't get grades for individual exams, they just add your all your marks up and give you a double grade based on that, so (as an example, I don't know what exam board you'e doing)
347 or more - 9-9
320-346 - 9-8
298-319 - 8-8
267 - 297 - 8-7
240-266 - 7-7
etc
347 or more - 9-9
320-346 - 9-8
298-319 - 8-8
267 - 297 - 8-7
240-266 - 7-7
etc

Double/ Combined Science counts as 2 GCSE's, which is why your teacher gave it to you as 2 separate grades as you mentioned above
If you got 5-5 this means you got a strong 5 based on the average of all your science papers. On your official GCSE certificate it will say e.g. 5-5 in Combined Science, and this is how you enter it on your UCAS as well, but it counts as 2 GCSE's at a grade 5. So if you got a 7-6, you'd enter 7-6 on your UCAS + it would be on your certificate, but it counts as you getting one grade 7 and one grade 6, if that makes sense?
