is thermometer used in reflux or distillation

Btec science
You use the thermometer in fractional distillation so you can measure the temperature and identify when you've reached the boiling point of the liquid you're trying to distil off from the solution. You can't use a thermometer in reflux because the top of the tube needs to be open or else the fractionating column will explode due to the gases being released.
