To become a graphic designer, there's only really one route: choose a mixture of subjects at A Level (including at least one creative one) or BTEC in Art & Design – then do a specialist degree course, perhaps with a Art & Design Foundation Diploma in between college and Uni. That's a tried and tested route. The UK is home to some of the best design degrees and agencies in the world. Apprenticeships for graphic design are very rare.

Film editing is different. It's quite possible to learn on the job. A lot of professional editors haven't got a relevant qualification. The more traditional route to work in film and tv is to get work as a 'runner' or an apprenticeship when you're 18/19 then progress up the ladder into the field you're interested in. Going to Uni and studying film is still a good option though.

There are crossovers between the two to consider too: animation, VFX, motion graphics etc.
