Hi all,
What happens to us PhD folks who made the big mistake of selecting no particular preference for college choice? Do we automatically get the worst one?
I come from a country where colleges dont really mean anything at all so didn't know any better unfortunately!

At graduate level, choice of College makes much less difference than at undergraduate level, as most of research activitiy takes places in Department (depending on field, but very much so in science and engineering). Applications with no preference will usually be allocated to Colleges so as to even out the numbers, so there is a lower chance of joing a "popular" College (Trinity, King's, etc.) and more chance of joining a less popular or specialist graduate College (Darwin, St Edmunds, Wolfson, etc). This doesn't mean that that they are necessarily "worse", and in fact some of them have advantages in terms of better facilities for graduates and less focus on undergraduate culture. The most important factors which will influence your PhD experience are choice of supervisor and Department - so if you got that bit right, everything else should hopefully fall into place!
