Pros and cons of private accommodation (Sheffield)

Hopefully next year I will be going to the University of Sheffield. Looking at Endcliffe/Ranmoor the prices are a little steep (£130-140 per week for en suite). I've been looking at some private halls (specifically Sharman Court) and they're much cheaper.
I'd just like to know if there are any significant downsides to going private, because from a price perspective it looks pretty good.

I'm also considering private accommodation (especially Rockingham House) but i heard that people tend to go to uni halls for 1st year to get "freshman experience"
Other people said that private student accommodation aren't that big of difference

So now I'm not sure TT__TT

Btw i applied for Korean with Japanese what about you?

Completely in the same boat right now…the stress 🙃
Uni Halls to me just seem like I’d be paying £££££ for ££ facilities, if that makes sense. And I’ve heard the same about getting the full 1st year experience, but at the same time there’s societies and course mates, so part of me feels like I’d get that regardless of where I’m staying.

If I were to go Uni accommodation it would be Allen Court.
My real toss up is between Sheffield 3 accommodation and Rockingham House.
I’ve heard that RH has friendly staff, and for the price the accommodation seems great. With Sheffield 3 it looks like it has more modern accommodation (tinyyy bit more expensive in RH for a similar room) but the location is further from the Uni in comparison to RH….

I’ve firmed my offer for Music and Korean Studies, so we’ll probably come across each other haha

Im in rockingham house currently and would not recommend, the lift has broke and has been broken for 2 weeks, there are only staff present 9-5 on weekdays, the rest of the time the only security we have is one student who is getting discounted rent to act as a 'warden'

If you don’t mind me asking, other than the lift problem, are there any main issues or problems with rooms ect? Compared to lots of accommodation reviews that I’m seeing from other student housing (minus Uni owned and the more expensive ones), the reviews about RH seem good for the price it’s offered at. I could probably handle a few flights of stairs, but are there any serious red flags? I’ve seen some places not having hot water/dodgy internet/dirty facilities/room or flat doors not locking… I could maybe fork out to go for a more expensive accommodation, but ideally with the location of RH and the price, it was starting to look like my best option

Hi,
I’m a third year student at the University of Sheffield. My experience with uni accommodation is that the majority of students do tend to stay in uni halls simply for the social aspect. It purely depends on your personal preference in regards to making friends and socialising meaning if you’re very outgoing and like socialising then regardless of where you stay this won’t be an issue.
Hope this helps

Hey there!
There are loads of considerations when it comes to choosing the accommodation that's right for you - hopefully this blog may help! Things to consider when choosing student accommodation | Student Roost

Private student accommodation can be just as social, we recommend just checking out the social spaces on offer and whether they offer any resident events as a starting point. If you have any queries on private accommodation or need any assistance if you wish to find out more about our Student Roost accommodation in Sheffield i would be more than happy to support

I stayed in Endcliffe and couldn't recommend more - people I know that were in private accomm regretted it.
