Becoming a nurse

I am returning back to university in September 2022 and I plan to do nursing.

First time I went to uni I studied forensic science however I dropped out as because I was covid we couldn't do practicals and also the lecturers were terrible.

The issue is I don't actually want to be a nurse, I am only doing it because agency pays well and I can use that money to travel which I love and also carry on my sewing business part time

If you are nurse do you think I can get through the course without liking it?

Why waste 3 years on something you don't intend to do as a career.

You don't go into a nursing career just looking for money as it's not about money I'm afraid as you doing this for sake of helping people better.

Would you waste 3 years of public tax money on something you would not do Emily.....? I wouldn't.

Both myself and Emily are registered adult nurse and midwife as both of us qualified few years ago.

I don’t know much about nursing, but I’m sure it helps to enjoy the degree in the first place. Maybe watch some videos on YouTube about nursing and students that have studied it in the past. Nursing is a very rewarding career, so if you’re driven by satisfaction then there’s your reason to go through with it.

I would go back to forensic nursing if jobs where actually there. I love sewing and fashion however I don't believe getting a degree in that area woukd be worth the debt.

I think I could come to enjoy nursing especially if I was to specialise in something I like such as forensic nursing

There’s no need to rush into anything hun. I would really take some time to really think your decision over - there are nursing jobs in prisons for example, maybe you could go and get a healthcare assistant job in a prison to see if you like it?

I would really think about what it is you’re passionate about - you obviously love sewing and fashion and although the industry is super competitive, someone has to succeed in it. You can also do things like fashion marketing/ buying/ merchandising/ journalism where you might be able to get more jobs. Look at the London college of fashion website perhaps.

I think you just really have to think about nursing properly. A lot of people drop out because they expect to be something else but it’s a really hard job. You work long hours, often without a break and sometimes the patients are so unappreciative. I love working for the NHS and working in healthcare, but my passion is helping people, so you just have to find yours.

Also, you say agency pays a lot - yes, this is true, but often you need some years experience before you join agency. Also, a lot of the nhs trusts will only use agency as a last resort because it costs so much, and so sometimes you can be asked to cover shifts at a moments notice. I’ve also personally worked with agency nurses who have turned up for their shifts only to be told that they’re no longer needed and that they can go home.

A NURSE WITHOUT A PASSION TO NURSE IS A BAD NURSE. please choose a degree you would enjoy. it will become clear to your tutors and mentors that you have no desire to nurse. its simply a job that you cant play at. its not an easy option. if your skills are into fabric and clothing then do a degree in that. my sister in law travelled a lot in fashion buying. it got boring and she retrained as a teacher

Have you thought about doing outpatients department as a qualified nurse or even GP practice nurse (you may need extra training for this but that's up to the individual GP practice to decide that). Rather than working on hospital wards....

Its a alternative to what you are looking for. I don't think there's many forensic nurses jobs about.

I haven't thought about that but will define research it. I think I'll just do adult nursing and see what I can brand off into that isn't ward based.

Hi

You have options in which area's you want to work in as a qualified nurse as you can apply for Jobs within these particular area's. It's not all ward hospitals based nursing okay. Do your homework with researching the different types of places you can work about in nursing.

I know that majority of the jobs now that being advertised in my field of midwifimg in my part of the UK are stating that you must work in both hospital and in the community.
