About choosing university

Hi everyone, I am just wondering if I want to become a data scientist/ some jobs of analytics, should I go to Bristol/Bath uni for Economics and Maths ( offer) and do Masters at LSE/UCL or wait until results day and decide whether to gap year and reapply next year to LSE/UCL ( which Im thinking of only do Bsc at). Or can I call LSE/UCL on results day and ask for vacancy, because I’m not sure what to do given that Adjustment is cancelled this year.
Thank you.

Firstly, congratulations on receiving offers from Bristol and Bath! These are great universities!
Secondly, in my opinion, you should consider your current offers and then pursue masters at LSE/UCL/Oxbridge rather than taking a gap year.

Hi, I would strongly consider getting your BSc degree and then applying for a masters somewhere to start to show specialisation for the that scientist role you wish to get. I know people at Bristol who are Maths graduates doing MScs and PhDs who feel it was a really good place in addition Bath are strong for placements and I think having a placement year to work in a company to gain experience and understand the type of MSc they are looking for would be invaluable. Getting a 1st or strong 2:1 will give you the opportunity to apply to LSE or UCL etc for the MSc or start work straight away.
Had you applied to UCL and LSE and failed to get offered this year? If so where is your fifth choice and have you heard back yet?
You should wait and see what results you get. Predicted grades are not achieved grades and deciding now to take a gap year so you can go to a more selective university, and then not getting their required grades, would be particularly silly.

Harsh but true
Amongst these Unis where you go wont matter - all are 'good' Unis and you will have a useable degree.
School leavers obsess about 'which Uni' and actually your graduate opportunities will hinge on your degree result, what else you did at Uni apart from study, vacation work etc, and placements within your degree - and that you can write a decont application. Which Uni at this level will not be the deal breaker.

The chances of LSE or UCL being in Clearing are, frankly, nil.
Go to Bath - it has one of the best placements set-ups in the UK and you will have a great time.
The rest is up to you.

I actually applied for imperial maths but got rejected, the other ones are Durham ( natural science- i will go for econs and maths) but i lean towards Bristol-Bath becuz its closer to london. My insurance is UEA maths- offer

But if I get a degree in LSE/UCL, will employers look at me differently, because I can go back to my country for a gap year since I can work for my uncle’s business and that’s something to be stated in my CV but im not sure if its any better than the other option….

Do you mean to be in clearing? No, there is basically zero chance of that. If UCL and LSE have rejected you then you will not be going there in October. You need to choose your firm and insurance from the universities which have given you offers (while making sure that you choose one which has made you an offer you are capable of achieving).

Hi, thank you for your comment. I was wondering if the firms are going to target the unis or only the big banks, because I also thought about maybe doing jobs in IB ( but my fav is data science), I know that Bristol is only a semi target, while UCl or LSE are massive targets, idk how firms will view my masters, because I may get a good job right away after Bsc in UCL/LSE without having to pay much for masters ( im international student so fee is quite high). So do you have any recommendations on that? Thank you!

It's data science, you'll be fine if you're really good and skilled.

I actually didnt apply to Ucl or LSE but i applied to Imperial for maths (but rejected😂), but I didn’t want to do maths alone only anymore but maths and econs for more jobs prospects, so I’m reconsidering UCL and LSE now, so thats why im not sure if I call them on results day and ask for vacancy, would that be alright, i know that chances of economics being in vacancy is so slim but u think I should give a call if i match the entry requirements?

I think you wait on Durham which is an excellent uni and then make your mind up. Have you done your exams or are you a UK based international student so are doing a levels this summer. A placement with a big firm is better than your uncle ‘s business unless he is owner of a large internationally recognisable business.

Can I ask if Durham or Bristol is better for economics? Thanks

Define 'better'.

Define 'better'.

Lol maybe more prestige, better education quality, better city life experience and job prospect should do it for me 😁.

And how do you intend to measure these variables - especially something as vague as 'prestige'?
One you start thinking about this you will realise how daft this sort of question is.
You cant define it, you can't measure it - so what are you looking for.

No-one can tell you if you are making the 'right' choice and no-one can tell you what you future career will look like - thats up to you, not the Uni badge on your degree certificate. You may be looking for concrete reasurance that you are 'making the right choice' but no-one/nothing is going to or can give you that.

Go to Offer Holders / Visit Days and look closely at the detail of each degree (2nd/3rd year options, placements etc) - ultimately its a decision only you can make.

Hey, being an international applicant myself, I can understand the rationale behind your apprehension. I would still urge you to consider doing a Bachelor's first from Bristol. Yes, it's not as massive a target as LSE/UCL, but it has a good employability rate. For jobs in Data Science, it's very very very important to have the right skills that you may build up while in college through online courses, internships (super important), and workshops in case you wish to work right after you graduate. Otherwise, there are plenty of scholarships available for bright international students for a master's degree in the UK. Just focus on getting a top grade while at Bristol and work on your skills - you will do great. All the best!
