York University interview question

I have an interview on Monday for the Theoretical physics bsc and I am beyond scared. Anyone who's had an interview or knows anything about the process, what kind of questions will I be asked? What kind of questions should I ask? Will I be asked an actual physics/maths based questions?

Hi @persephone337,

Congratulations on getting an interview, I wish you the best of luck for Monday!

Interviews can be daunting - I studied Music at York but I remember having to audition and interview, which I was really worried about. All I can say is that by offering you an interview, it shows that the Department of Physics are really interested in you and your application must have stood out! Although it might not feel like it now, they will be on your side and want you to do well. My course was very different to yours, but the interview I had felt more like a conversation around my areas of interest. As you are passionate about your course, let it show and hopefully you will have plenty to talk about!

All interviews are different, but common first questions are often about why you are interested in studying your chosen subject at university, why you applied to your chosen university and what you want to achieve by studying your degree (e.g. possible future plans if you have any).

Our guide to interviews could be really useful to read. The main takeaway for me is that an interview is a 2-way conversation and so it might be good to think of a few questions you'd like to ask, as this will show your interest in the course and the department. Maybe have a read of this blog by a current Theoretical Physics student to learn a bit more about what it's like to study the course, as it might prompt you to think of some questions.

You could also try our online platform where you can chat to a current student, as they might have more in-depth knowledge of the Physics interview process.

I hope this helps!

Hazel

I have an interview next Friday for mathematics and statistics Bsc too. They informed me to bring a pen and paper, and I am worried about letting me do some math questions.

I also have an interview for physics bsc at York this Monday! I’m terrified that my mind is going to blank and I’ll have no idea how to answer the questions 😭
