English GCSE- vocabulary

A common mistake I have done with some of my questions is failing to use much sophisticated expression and include technical vocabulary, I am not sure what is meant by this. Can someone explain and give some examples?

I'm guessing 'sophisticated expression' could refer to how sophisticated your analysis is?

For example, instead of saying: this creates a violent atmosphere, you could say: this contributes to the recurring motif of the macabre.

There is nothing wrong with the first example, but the second uses a technique (motifs) and higher level vocab (macabre.)

'Technical vocabulary' might mean technical terms (e.g. abstract nouns, metaphors, hyperbole, anaphora, ellipsis, adjectives, adverb, syntax, etc.)

This was just a guess but I hope this helped!
