Jacket Potatoes in the microwave!

Okay so I'm out in France with no oven! I want to make a jacket potato in the microwave.

I was thinking 8 minutes maybe as its a medium sized potato? Does the potato need to be dry and will any potato work? And there are loads of sites saying you need to cover the potato with kitchen roll or clingfilm - why is this?

Sorry it's not something I usually do, as I tend just to bake them in the oven - but that's not possible now!

Just wondering if anyone could give me some advice!

Well I'm not a cook but when I've seen my mum doing them she just places it on a piece of kitchen paper. Oh and pricks them with a fork first. But don't know how long they cook for sorry.
It varies by microwave. I'd say put it in for about 4 minutes, then check how soft it is with a knife, and then possibly turn it over, and do it for another 4 minutes?

Also, obviously wash it before you put it in the microwave, and most importantly, PIERCE the potato with a knife all over it!

Yeah prick it and shove it on kitchen roll for around 5 mins, check it, if its not done, another 2 mins? thats what I do.

Yep, wash and pierce the potato, cook it for 5-6 minutes and then turn it over and do the same again, otherwise it sticks to the plate and hardens.

dont cover it with kitchen foil.
cook it for seven minutes, then fork it right to the middle, if potato comes out on the fork then it's ready. if it's not ready put it in for two minute increments till its ready.
wash the potato and scrub it to get as much mud off as possible, prick it plenty of times with a fork and dig out the icky eye things.

Probably about 5-6 minutes. I remember my sister once got confused and put it in for 30 minutes, managing to set it on fire. Those were the days.
Wash it, prick it all over with a fork, out it in the microwave on a plate, roughly 5mins for every potato you put in (so 10 mins for two, 15 mins for three, etc) and keep checking it, once you stick a knife in it and it feels soft enough, its done.
Aaah double post! Stupid safari!

Jacket potatoes just done in the microwave are horrible :o:

I normally do them in the micro for like 15 mins, then wrap them in foil and stick them in the oven

But in your case.....build a bonfire? wrap them in foil and throw them in
I overcook my potatoes in the microwave because I like the crispy bits. But in essence you wash and dry the potato. Make sure you prick it or it will explode and then microwave on one side for 4 mins, flip over and cook for another 4 mins. (I do 5 mins 1 side, 6 on the next)

Usually prick it and put in on a sheet of kitchen towel. Then do it for 5 minutes one side and 5 minutes the other

Dont put foil in the microwave!

This.

And seriously don't put foil or anything metallic in! It will blow up the microwave! And don't use clingfilm directly on the potato either, it will all melt together and you will never get it off!

aww bless you
i dont actually know how you would do it but its cute that you dont know  lol

Thanks for the sympathy! I'll let you know how I get on!

But seriously who doesn't have an oven, that's crazy...It perhaps the most essential human invention - for me anyway! I can't even make a pizza - instead I have to go out and buy a 12 euro one from a restaurant.

Aww! Sorry :p:
I've always done jacket potatoes in the microwave, baked potatoes are the ones you do in the oven! It depends largely on the wattage of the microwave and the exact size of the potato, but try doing it for 3 minutes, turning it over, doing it for another 3 and then pricking it with a knife to see how soft it is, it may need a bit longer.

Why would anyone put clingfilm on it in the microwave?

They are disgusting out the microwave, just a pale shadow of their magnificent oven baked glory.
