not sure where to go for university

I have applied to university in both London and my home city. The uni in london is one of the top ten in the world and it would mean so much for me to go there. however i am not sure if i would be happy studying in london in general. a lot of people have mixed feelings about how they feel studying in london, and i wanted to ask, for an introvert who would not be having any night life and live in london completely alone, would london be a bad option? a lot of people who have a good time only seem to have a good time because of socialising and going to parties, but that's not my thing. and i feel like i would struggle with my mental health a lot more being completely isolated from everything and everyone, so i'm not sure what to do. i would also have to take out more loans and lose a lot more money and financially struggle being in london compared to staying at home. however, missing out on a uni that great that has such a high reputation makes me feel guilty in some way.

Have you been and visited on open days?
And what do you mean by living alone - most first years will live in uni accommodation with other freshers, which means it is really easy to make friends and get to know people!
In terms of not wanting to go out partying, that isn’t a problem. Yes there is a thriving nightlife in London, but there are also so many other things to do that don’t involve partying. London unis are big, and so there will be a huge range of people there - you will definitely be able to find people who you get on with and who have similar interests. That’s the thing about London - there is something there for everyone. If you fancy going round museums or cafes then you can do that!
In terms of the finances, it does depend on your course but often graduates from London unis will have reasonably high salaries - so you can make up for the increased loan with a well paying job in the future?
Obviously only you will know what is best for yourself, but I wouldn’t be so quick to rule out London and a course and uni that you really like.

Hi there @jann3489

Yeah studying in London can seem daunting, so write out a list of pros and cons before you jump to a decision.

I am an introvert too and it's the first time I was leaving my country to study in a completely different continent so I understand the anxiety behind leaving home. Unlike my expectations though, I did not cry at all! It was so astonishing because I am an emotional person and this big a change would sure have gotten me into tears. But the thing with uni is, there are literally so many people around you who are in the same situation as you. You learn to embrace each other's company and don't feel alone. There are so many events during the day for you to socialise even if you don't like drinking or bars or going out at night, so don't worry.

I have lived outside uni accommodation since my first year so it was even more daunting. But if you can, I would definitely recommend staying in uni accommodation because there's a higher chance for you to socialise and make friends. I am studying on a loan too but if you work hard and get a job in London, then repaying those loans would not be so hard. Also, for that, you do not have to go to a London university. There are so many employers who just want a good talent irrespective of where you study.

All in all, I don't think it's a good decision to choose a university just because it ranks high. You must be able to feel like you belong there and be happy at the thought of studying there for the next 3-4 years. Go visit the university and get a feel for it yourself.

Hope that helps!
