Should i retake my GCSEs when i passed?

I thought i could wing my GCSEs and hope i get a good result, i got a 5 in Maths and 6 6 in Literature and Language. I didn’t believe that GCSEs really mattered unless you didn’t pass. Now i want to get into uni and i really enjoy mathematical courses however i have a Maths GCSE at grade 5 which doesn’t actually represent my abilities in the present. Should i retake my GCSE to ge a higher grade when i believe i can get higher?

Hi there

I personally would encourage you to go for it, if that's what you truly want. It will certainly require a lot of hard work and commitment and you're likely to get little support from your college as they will only teach foundation GCSE to those who've failed or maths A level.

I personally resat my GCSE maths privately (self studying and sitting my exam externally) from getting a 5 in GCSE foundation for my A levels and desired uni course. Which A levels are you currently studying and will unis accept you if you don't take Maths A level?

Hope this makes sense

I'm currently doing a BTEC Business course and my college doesn't currently offer A Level Maths. So was thinking to resit GCSEs instead of taking an extra year to get A Level Maths at a different college which I may not even be able to apply for.

Unfortunately it's likely you won't be allowed to attend more than one college. I myself thought of this as a solution but was rejected :frown:

I'm not sure if you can do a maths degree at uni without having done A level Maths. @Admit-One if you could help

It’s very unlikely to find a Maths related course that doesn’t require Maths at AL.

There are some business related courses that will take a strong GCSE maths grade, but even those options might be limited with a 5.

To be honest I would take AL Maths because it’s going to open a lot more doors than a bump up of the GCSE grade.

It may be worth looking around first and asking a few unis what maths they’d need alongside the BTEC though.
