yes... 'provides an alternative reaction pathway with a lower activation energy' is the phrase we were taught

I would say that Iron acts as a catalyst which increases the rate of reaction by providing an alternative reaction pathway, therefore a higher proportion of particles have energy > the Activation Energy and therefore can collide and react successfully.
