Recently realised I really want to study animal care but only have IT qualifications?

Im 22 and i just finshed a 3 year BTEC course studying IT (Level 3,2, Diploma in IT) only to realise now that i've always wanted to study and work with animals instead.

I only studied IT in the first place because i was pretty good at coding and had a vague interest in web developing and design. The plan was to go onto uni to study just that. However, towards the end of my course, my interest just started to...fizzle out? It didn't make me feel happy anymore despite being good at it. I just dont have the passion to continue, and obviously it wouldnt be a good idea to go ahead with uni knowing that.

On the other hand I've always had a keen interest in working with animals for the longest time ever and would really like to pursue a career surrounding it. However apart from taking care of a few cats of my own, i have no experience.

The past month i've been trying to find part time work involving animal care but unsurprisingly alot of employers are looking for people who are preferably experienced and have qualifications in animal management. So i've tried looking for volunteering at local animal shelters but it turns out they are looking for people who have experience too? I've been turned down by RSPCA and a few others within my radius.

As for my lack of qualifications i've looked up apprenticeships but mostly found level 2 ones which are equivalent to GCSEs level. Given that i've just completed a level 3 course, i feel like i would be taking a step back if i took 2 years to do a level 2 again...and there are rarely any level 3 animal apprenticeships that are available in London for me.

I don't know what other options there are. My chances of studying anything to do with animals in uni are quite slim as of right now and i'm worried that im wasting too much time. Does anyone have any recommendations of where i can go from here?

This situation also applies to me. I graduated in information systems with a degree in management (oddly enough, but it's not an IT degree). I found myself no longer interested in designing software and wanted to turn to medical research. Well, I know it sounds crazy and there's no chance of getting it in near future. Now I just praying that one day I'll get rich ASAP , and then I can do whatever I want.

Have you tried contacting universities doing Animal Management Degrees to see their entry requirements? Some will allow students who don’t have an animal background. I went into a Foundation Degree in Animal Management from A-Levels (IT and Psychology).

Are you looking to stay close to home for university? Where abouts in London do you live? Do you drive? I can try and help you to find some volunteer experience to help get you started, but sadly it’s not realistic to get even a part-time job in the industry without qualifications and experience.

The best places to go are independent rescues, veterinary practices, and some zoos offer volunteering experience. The RSPCA and big companies are hard to get into without the prior experience like you stated.

Hi there, really sorry for replying late. Thank you for responding. Admittedly, I never did contact any unis or checked the entry requirements for their courses because i honestly thought there's no chance they would take a candidate that has no background experience with animals or qualifications. But seeing how it was possible for you, I will definetly check it out now.

Regarding uni, I don't mind at all staying on campus or attending a uni thats near home. I live in North London, wont say the exact borough (just to be safe) but its near Barnet. I do not drive, although during this period of job searching, I'm planning on taking some driving lessons and passing my theory test. In the meantime, i usually travel by tubes and buses, so i do not mind having to venture abit further to any available places that can allow me to volunteer.

Yeah i figured alot of well known organisations like RSPCA are less likely to take on just about anyone. There are a few independent rescue shelters around, but they mostly prefer people who are currently enrolled on an animal related course or have the qualifications but i'll keep applying to them anyway.

At this point, I'm really regretting that i didn't study animal management/behaviour back when i was in college instead of doing IT. I had no idea. However, i guess its still somewhat helpful to have qualifications in the IT sector as it has unlimited roles and can be opportunistic...however even finding any IT related part-time work is proving to be difficult. Just about any kind of work actually.

Once you’re on a course, it will be easier to find a volunteer placement as you will typically need it for work experience, so to find one before and become comfortable is a good idea!

Have you tried Safe Haven Animal Rescue? They are in welling, it doesn’t mention volunteering on the site however.
There is Maryon Wilson Animal Park, contactable by Facebook I believe (can’t find a designated main site) based on Flamsteed Road.
Celia Hammond Animal Trust are looking for volunteers to help with cats - that’s a good start. They are based on Barking Road and I believe they have more sites.

To find these (not all results), I literally go on google maps, hovered over the area ‘Barnet’ and then typed “animal” which provided so many places. You can also enquire at veterinary practices to be a volunteer animal care assistant, you may be lucky!

State to these independent organisations that you are hoping to start a course in the near future.

Capel Manor College do a FdSc in Animal Management and Zoology, you need 63 UCAS tariff points and 3 GCSEs (A* to C) including English and Maths. If you enquire to them, they may accept you onto the course even though the level 3 qualification is not that relevant, but I would suggest looking at the module summary and studying up beforehand. They also have courses from Level 1-3 and an Access to HE course which may be suitable for you as I believe you can get an Advanced Learner Loan, which gets written off when you go to university (if applicable to all universities) (it’s a level 3 course, but enables you to switch pathways).

I presume this is local to you? Or search around the country, any “colleges” offering university degrees are more likely to accept you than university institutions I believe, that’s what I found when contacting universities. But the good thing is you could do the foundation degree and then top up to anywhere!

That’s the reason I got an A-Level IT, thought I’d be set for life! Difficult if you’re not a software developer I’ve found, which I’m not.

I’m in a similar position as I am looking into Animal Management or similar University courses but only have BTEC Level 3 IT qualifications.

I was wondering how your time studying Foundation Animal Management Degree has been?
Did you enjoy taking an Animal Management Degree?
If you have gotten any jobs?
How their pay is?
And what advise would you have for me as I’m a person who lives near Central Manchester and looking for entering Animal Management/Animal Care or similar University Degrees.
