I think salaries have changed this year. I am a trainee outside London and my salary is £31k, i started this Jan. I checked online and new trainees are getting £25k, with an increase to £31k after the first year. Not sure why that is. This has me worried about my salary increase when i move to being a tier 1 l/a

That seems very odd given the MOJ pay increase hasn’t come in yet. I started this month and my pay is £26,092, but that’s an increase in the usual pay because I transferred from CPS and brought my higher CPS salary with me.

Maybe it’s one of those vagaries we’ll never understand!

Just a query, I’m starting the role mid October and not had contact with my manager yet. Am I right in thinking that the dress code will be smart business (suit tie etc) at all times? Thanks if anyone can clarify

I think contact with managers really depends on the manager - mine arranged a Teams catch up a week before but I know some didn’t have any contact until the first day.

You’re right on the dress code

This is a new scheme. You’ll move up to the higher salary if you reach a certain point in your training/portfolio. Your SLM will be able to discuss that with you.

Thank you for your reply. Please do you have an idea what the salary will be for tier 1 L/As? On the new scheme?

I don’t. This might depend on your location and when you started. You’d be better off speaking with your LTM or SLM about salaries.

I got my contract through and I’m on 25,826. Hope that helps
Hi. Does anyone have a template for the Tier 1 portfolio that they’d be willing to share?

I’m in family but I think they’d be interchangeable.

Many thanks in advance

It’s on the judicial college learning page. You’ll need to make sure you set up an account for that as it’s where your training contract modules are
Yeah. Thank you. Not entirely thrilled with that one - one note isn’t my thing, and that’s designed mainly for crime.
I was hoping someone went old school.

But I guess I could use some of those elements to fo old school myself

I think there’s a big expectation and push for the use of OneNote because you can then share and edit the documents with your mentor and your line manager. To be honest most of the documents I’ve had sight of - for both work and the TC - are on OneNote.

The portfolio isn’t crime-based though as far as I can see. Your mentor meetings, collection of evidence, daily log etc are the same whichever area you’re in. There may be one or two things focused on crime but I’d just cut those out. I think you’re meant to do it on ON so it can be submitted to the training principal that way now, but could be wrong on that.

That may just be your area. There is no push on one note for us. It’s very much there as a tool to use if we want, as a guide, or we’ve been recommended to source templates from other trainees.

and we may be looking at different versions of the template as the one I have is designed for crime LAs with hints and tips and examples of crime courts - very much geared towards crime. Maybe the template for content is the same, or the expectation for content is the same, but it isn’t user friendly or helpful so it’s not for me. Thanks again.

If you’d like I can email you the template I downloaded from the Judicial College Learning website? Thats the one approved by HMCTS and that is to be submitted when you’re applying for progression (or so I am told anyway).
Hello everyone. Was wondering if anyone could kind of give me some reassurance. I’m new to this role and I am feeling a little out of my depth at the minute. With experience does this get any better? Did anyone else feel the same?

I would be surprised if you didn’t feel a little like this. I used to work in the court as a Court Associate and even I felt the same starting this role.

Are you in Crime or Family? It definitely gets easier as you progress and get used to the court environment and the processes. Feel free to direct message me if you need any assistance.

Thanks for your reply. It’s reassuring that you also felt that way, even with the prior experience. I’m in crime, I thought after studying it that I would be somewhat at a good starting point but after sitting in court the last few days, it feels overwhelming! Thank you for the offer of support, it is much appreciated!
