look at the conclusion of the piece if there is one. A lot of summary can be found there. How long is the abstract?

Try dividing the piece up into sections and then go through each one highlighting the main points that the author is trying to make. This should help you bring it all together at the end.

If you have access to JSTOR check out a few scholarly book reviews. Sometimes they're a little on the short side but a decent book review will offer up something like a three or four paragraph summary of the author's ideas, how they've structured them, what evidence they're relying on and what overall points they're making. Obviously a Precis isn't simply a book review but it's a handy starting point in the art of representing a work in shrunken form.
