i) the Speckled Wood is a butterfly

ii) this looks more like a Wall butterfly Lasiommata megera

Yes, I agree on both counts.... although I can see how the underwing could be mistaken for the other species to a less experienced eye.

merci de ne pas réchauffer vos rillettes sur les radiateurs des vestiaires.
ces délicieuses friandises à la viande sont irrésistibles pour les mouches et autres.
Bientôt, les oiseaux volent pour se régaler des insectes.
Bientôt, c'est le pandémonium complet alors que les oiseaux se battent
les uns contre les autres et attaquent les rideaux avec leurs pattes pointues.
La semaine dernière encore,
la grosse Suzette la femme de ménage m'a dit qu'une huppe faisait ses besoins
dans son pastis alors qu'elle était assise sur le belvédère.
Pourquoi ne pas laisser vos rillettes à la réception dès votre arrivée ?
Big Élodie dispose d'une armoire spéciale pour réchauffer toutes sortes de viandes.

I think it was the 3rd or 4th ever in Shetland, in the hotel garden. Seen by many photographers on the day, one or two with £10k lenses. But sleepy enough in October to capture it on a phone camera 😁

It was my 59th species seen in GB that year.

it is in very good condition assuming it had flown right across the Atlantic :yep:

Beyond comprehension really, although it did have a damaged wing not apparent in the photo. I seem to recall one turned up in the Isles of Scilly around the same time, which is less unusual. The prevailing winds had been in the right direction.

i suppose if they get up in the jet stream the journey would take less than a day
