Does anyone know when the next research assessment is? AFAIK, the last one was in 2001.
2008 I believe.

Innericty - League tables are a load of crap, they change up and down every year, don't judge a university by its league table position, judge a university for its reputation and how well it suits you.

True..

That's why the RHUL Music Department has a 6* rating - because it was given 5* in both RAE assessments.

6* rating was introduced in England in 2003 to distinquish the highest level of research quality. 6* is awarded to those achieving 5* in both the 1996 and 2001 Research Assessment Exercises or 5 in 1996 and 5* in 2001 with a greater number of staff returned in 2001.

I think 6* rating should be a new thing in the future, since some of them are using it right now.

See

http://www.rae.ac.uk/default.htm

The RAE score of a department can have a significant effect on the department's income as the rating from 2001 is used in the formula for distributing the main grant even if the staff who achieved the grade are long gone.

I think there should be a rating of 6 instead of 6*.

NB 6* is only relevant for English HEIs as the other funding councils did not give resources this way.
