Ahhh! Very cool! Hope you enjoy it.

Can I ask why you're on this forum? Since you're Canadian.

Hi punctuation!

I wanted to ask questions regarding Cambridge and Oxford, since I was planning on applying to one of them this year.

Oh, I see. So did you end up choosing McGill over Oxbridge in the end? Or did you mean after your program at McGill?

Hi punctuation!

I decided not to apply this year, but I might after my undergraduate studies. If I may ask, why don't you want to stay in Canada for university? I hope I don't sound offensive, but besides Oxford and UCL, none of the schools you're planning to apply to this October are better than Canadian ones such as Toronto and McGill.

Long story, but to sum it up - I want to go elsewhere, instead of going to the same universities all my classmates are, the UK has a great education system, the undergraduate program is also a year shorter than Canada's, and I love the UK.

Oxford and UCL are my main choices, of course, the others are back-up, of sorts.

Hi punctuation!

Are your parents paying, or have you managed to secure some sort of funding? International student fees are terribly expensive, especially now.

Parents paying. I have a good education fund which works for 20k (CAD) per year for 4 years. It's geared for Canadian unis, of course, but it can also be used for international. As well my parents have money set away in the bank after selling a few houses for extra expenses.

Oh and I have about 6k in spending money in my savings account.

Indeed the fees are quite expensive compared to Canadian unis as a Canadian student... however at least the fees aren't going up for international fees in the UK. As opposed to domestic/EU fees which are rising by about 200% for 2012 entry.

Hi punctuation!

You mean RESP, right? Haha:smile: I have that too~~ I do urge you, however, to consider staying in Canada for university. Undergraduate education is the same everywhere. I understand you might want the international experience, but sometimes it isn't worth the cost, particularly if you're going in to a program (Psychology in your case) that are really great at select universities in Canada too. If you don't get accepted to Oxford and/or UCL, it would be best to just stay in Canada then. There is no point going to a second-rate university (As far as I am concerned, Surrey and Exeter aren't really that great schools internationally) when you can go to Toronto or McGill, schools which are ranked highly in league tables if you care about that sort of thing.

Well, they're a cute couple I suppose but I'm kind of neutral on the subject. I'm not going to throw eggs at their car, but I'm not buying a commemorative plate either.

I'm off to study in Canada in September and I was just wondering what's the best way of getting my stuff over there? My flight has a 20kg weight allowance but I will probably need around double that.

I've been quoted £170ish to ship it out there; is there not a cheaper method (this seems pretty expensive to me!)?

I'm wondering about this too; I'm not going this Septebmer but applying for the following September.. and personally I think I'd need 4 times as much
you can pay for excess baggage on airlines can't you? That might be cheaper than having it shipped.

As the other poster mentioned, you can pay more to have more weight allowance. I think it would be cheaper and faster than having it shipped individually. Check the website for your airline, they should have a page that tells you how much it would cost for each extra kilo, for example.

Ryerson is a bit of a 'soft' uni. It's good for journalism but otherwise isn't perceived as that great. Waterloo is really well known for engineering/sciences/those sorts, so I would recommend it. UofT is also fantastic, and the benefit of UofT over Waterloo is that it's more internationally renowned - however, it's known for its crazy class sizes (up to 1000 students/lecture!). Your choice really. Also Toronto is a much nicer city, Waterloo's okay, not much going on compared to the citylife. (There is an Oktoberfest though!)

Often, if you want more than just a few kilos of extra weight, its just cheaper to get your stuff shipped over to Canada.
