Red shift occurs when an object is moving away from the observer. It mostly occurs with celestial bodies like stars. They appear more red. hence the term redshift. This is because the EM waves are being more "spread out" so its therefore shifted to the lower end of the visible light spectrum giving off the colour red. Blueshift is the opposite of this.
