Well, because:
1) Slapping someone is wrong, physical violence is wrong. Will Smith was wrong to get up and slap Chris Rock, if he wanted to protest it would have been better to leave the ceremony.
2) Chris Rock's joke was in bad taste. There's a difference between comedy and humiliation/ bullying, and poking fun at a home because she has issues with alopecia is going too far, in my opinion.

Just my opinion

Feel sorry for Will Smith.
He found himself between a Rock and a hard face. 😊

Funny thing was how tame that joke was. If that had been Ricky Gervais or Jimmy Carr it would have been so much worse

Imagine thinking that making a joke about some millionaire celebrity going bald is "going too far" ...
