PGCE Maths Equivalency

Hi all,

I have an equivalency test for Maths coming up at Cardiff Met since my GCSE grade from 16 years ago was a C and not the required B. Absolutely dreading it as I'm not particularly good at it and really struggle with the more difficult elements (e.g. factorising equations, finding angles / lengths of a triangle using COS and SIN etc).

Does anyone have any particular experience of the equivalency test offered by Cardiff MET for this? We were advised to look at WJEC past papers but those are actual GCSEs and I'm assuming not completely representative of what I will sit on the day.

Good luck!

I can't say I know much about the Cardiff Met test specifically, but I know that my coursemate who sat an equivalency test for a course in England said it was very similar to the GCSE papers, but had more number-focused questions than the GCSE papers she had practiced with. Not sure if that will be the same for the Cardiff Met one though, obviously.

If you are struggling, you might find CorbettMaths helpful - all of their resources are free and they have a teaching video for pretty much every single GCSE topic, as well as loads of practice questions. MathsGenie can also be helpful, as they have revision questions by topic that include worked solutions, so you can see where you went wrong.

We have it on the same day then! I cannot for the life of me cope with trigonometry. (And I'm doing the Secondary English PGCE...) I have e-mailed them and they say they need 58% on the paper for us to meet a B grade.

58% is not bad at all. I can’t cope with the equations and stuff. Wish you posted on here sooner we could have spoke about revision. Good Luck

Do you know how long it will take for us to get results?

I don't actually, we can ask tomorrow I suppose. I also struggle with equations! I've been doing loads of WJEC past papers and have for most of them gotten around the 62% mark so it's too close for comfort!

Good Luck. I’m so nervous

Me too. Need to get this maths out the way! But remember we have 2 more attempts anyway, so it's not the end of the world if it goes tits up today.

What did you think of it?

Umm it was better than I thought but there was a few questions that threw me. Completely forgot how to work out the volume one and couldn’t solve the equation. How about you?

Couldn't do the parallelogram one at all, or the hardest equation, so pretty much the same for me! It was a bit easier than I thought mostly... I told the woman there though that the marks didn't add up to 75 like it says at the front of the paper, they only added up to 64. So hopefully there isn't a **** up there.

No way? That means tho that if you only need 57% you need roughly 37 marks on it

Hello there,

Unfortunately, Cardiff Met does not offer the equivalency test.

We would suggest you have a look at the equivalency test here: Advice for Applicants Equivalency Exams (cardiffmet.ac.uk).

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us via [email protected].

Good luck in your exam anyway!
