biodiversity definition

does anyone know the definition for "biodiversity" other than "variety of ..."?

Depends what level of education you're at. If it's A level or GCSE, I think "presence of multiple alleles within a population" is the correct level of detail.

thanks, is it also okay to describe it as the number of different species?

for A level (specifically CIE) i would suggest noting these 3 things:
1. the different types and number of species
2. the genetic diversity between and within species
3. the diversity of the habitats present

the other poster was probably more right than me in that you should mention number of different species and variation of alleles within each species.

Here's the definition from the AQA Biology spec: Biological diversity biodiversity is reflected in the vast number of species of organisms, in the variation of individual characteristics within a single species and in the variation of cell types within a single multicellular organism.
