Uni of Southampton accommodation

I’m about to apply for uni of Southampton and need some help with accommodation choice. I’ll be studying natural sciences so I think there will be lectures at highfield and NOCS. Mayflower aesthetically looks the nicest but I’m also thinking about glen eyre and Wessex lane. What are the pros and cons of these 3? Thanks!

Hi @dylanjc,

There are loads of things to consider when choosing accommodation. I stayed in Hartley Grove (Glen Eyre) and loved it, but I may be a little biased.

There are a few key things to consider when choosing any accommodation: location, price, facilities and any other specific things that are important to you. Glen Eyre is closest to Highfield but Mayflower is closest to NOCS. Wessex Lane is relatively central to them both, though closer to Highfield.

Mayflower is the newest of the three so if new, modern-looking facilities are important to you, this could be a good choice. That's not saying that the others are old though. I had no complaints about the facilities at Glen. With facilities, it's also important to consider options like whether you want an en-suite or shared bathroom and if you want to be catered, part-catered or self-catered. These affect the price but also where you could stay depending on if they offer the facilities you want.

Price is also important for many people. Look at the prices on the website and the application form and see which one best suits your budget.

Socialising could be a factor for you too. Look at how many people are likely to be in the flats you're looking at, I lived with 5 other people when I was in Halls but there are many options when it comes to how many people to live with depending on where you stay. Glen Eyre is also the biggest complex so there are loads of people to chat with and it always feels very lively.

There are also designated 'quiet flats' including Hartley, where I stayed, which could be an option if you'd prefer noise to be kept to a minimum. It essentially meant that you had to keep noise down after 10pm.

I will always recommend Glen Eyre as that's what I have the most experience with. I loved the big, green areas, picnic benches, bbqs and the range of facilities.

I hope this very brief advice on choosing accommodation is useful but please feel free to ask any other questions or for more details.

Hi @dylanjc,

Just to add on to Daisy's great advice, first year students in university halls are also offered a free bus pass which makes getting from campus to campus so much easier. This would be important to consider when picking your accommodation as it means wherever you stay, you will be able to get from campus to campus really easily. The bus links and stops are also really frequent in Southampton.

Of course, things are subject to change, so it would be worth double checking with the university accommodation team or their website to confirm this is still being offered for the year you are applying for.

Best of luck with everything! If you have anymore questions, please ask away.

Hello,

To help fully answer your question I would recommend sending an email over to the accommodation team at Southampton, which is [email protected].

However, I have just had a look at the accommodation website which offers some helpful information about who will receive accommodation offers and when. One important piece of information I found stated 'Students planning to study undergraduate courses (conditional, unconditional and insurance offer holders) will receive an accommodation offer within two weeks of submitting an application.' Having a further look at this page may be helpful, you can find it at https://www.southampton.ac.uk/student-life/accommodation/apply.

Again, I would recommend getting in touch with the accommodation team who can offer up to date information about the accommodation process for your cohort, and offer any more guidance you may need about applications etc.

If you have any more questions please don't hesitate to ask.
