Transitioning to law after PhD

Hi everyone,

I am a second-year PhD student in French lit at Cambridge. I have realised that I no longer want to pursue an academic career and would like to transition to law after completing the doctorate. I wondered if anyone else here has completed the GDL course while finishing a PhD and if they could share a bit about that experience. Also, did anyone find that having done a PhD first was a disadvantage when applying for positions?
Doubt you can do the GDL while doing the PhD - Cambridge probably have a statute about not being registered with another uni or on another programme at Cambridge simultaneously (and if they don't your PhD funding source may well do).

No idea about it being a disadvantage (or advantage). It does demonstrate you can do in depth research, but that might be more of a quality for the Bar than for solicitor work.
