Is a Business Management Degree worth it in the UK?

I am an International student planning my masters in the UK and I learnt that business and management degrees are somewhat looked down upon. Is that really true?

Hello,

I am a final year Business student at the University of Bath and would be happy to help answer your question.

I would say that business and management degrees are certainly viewed highly, especially when they are from a university that ranks highly in the university league tables.

For anyone with a degree in a management course there is definitely high employability and your graduate job prospects at the end of 4 years will be really good- especially if you have undergone a year in industry as part of this degree. These degrees give you transferrable skills to the business world, something which employers really like to see. For example, at the University of Bath you can take certain modules such as operations management or corporate social responsibility which give you really in-depth knowledge about these sides of a business- something employers will be interested to see that you have. Also, as I mentioned, if you do a placement (time working in a business) as part of the degree you will be able to add to your CV some real-world experience, something employers also look for in their applicants.

Most degrees are not looked down upon as they show that a person has worked hard and committed to something challenging- a good trait for anyone to have.

I hope this helps!

Best of luck,
Kayley

Hi! Thank you so much for the response but I'm actually looking for my Master's in International Management at the University of Bath and have received an offer for the same. I'd like to know the median salary post the course and how easily I'd get a job as i have a loan to repay as an international student. Also, I'd like to know about how I'd be able to get a part time job to cover some bits of the chunk of expenses that I have to incur for the degree. Thanks in advance

Most degrees aren’t worth it.

You can get any type of offer with an management master. However, it really depends on the university and your grades. In the course of a university project (I don't earn money with it), I collected the top management universities in Europe. Here you can get an overview of the top programs/universities and look up specific requirements and also the costs for it: targetuniversities.com

Hi @cad99,

Building upon what others have said, I believe Business Management Degrees to be highly regarded as well. Not only is it the most popular degree the UK (or certainly was a few years ago, I don't believe it has changed) is also offered by almost every university in the country in some form or another, only adding testament to its value.

I'm currently at the University of Southampton, which has a growing Business School. Like Kayley said, Business Management degrees typically offer a lot of flexibility or at masters level focused pathways too, meaning you can broaden your skillset generally or in an area of particular interest for you such as I have around Innovation and Project Management aspects. However, there are many pathways.

I hope this helps. If you have any further questions I'd be more than happy to answer them!

All the best.

Hello,

Whilst business management degrees are not widely considered from a student perspective, can still be a brilliant prospect if you are focused on industry engagement. Pursuing a degree/masters in business will be beneficial for developing skillset. At Pearson College London our degree pathways are specifically designed to simulate real-life business contexts and taught by industry professionals with a particular focus on emploaybility, with the majority of our graduates earning more than £30,000 post-graduation, if this is something that interests you, please check out our webiste: https://www.pearsoncollegelondon.ac.uk/

I had similar doubts before starting my Business Management degree, but I’ve found it opens more doors than I expected—especially when paired with internships or real-world projects. It’s true you get out what you put in. Tools like Phonexa helped me bridge theory with practical skills, especially in data-driven decision making. It’s worth it if you stay proactive.

Hi @cad99 ,

It's great to see you are looking to study business and management 😊. I'm personally studying business and management myself and I do not feel that it's looked down upon due to the vast amount of opportunities the course gives you.

There are an abundance of employment opportunities, including graduate schemes with competitive salaries. Additionally business and management covers a broad range of skills, meaning you have the chance to work in a variety of industries. I recommend checking out websites that share graduate schemes and you can see how desirable a business and management degree can be.

When it comes to people looking down on the course, do not concern yourself with this. Many people view different courses in different lights due to personal outlooks. However these opinions will not matter for your future career, as having a masters in business will hugely benefit your employability and put you on a great path for your desired career.

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask me any questions,
-Sophia (University of Central Lancashire)
