Hi guys,
For my individual investigation, i'm doing the bromine clock reaction. Bromide ions react with bromate (V) ions, in acid solution, to produce bromine and some water (= sign replaces arrow)
5Br- + BrO3- + 6H+ = 3BR2 + 3H2O
However, here's the relavant part, i also add phenol and methyl orange indicator to the reaction mixture. Methyl orange to indicate the colour change, and the phenol to mop up the free bromine before hand
In the book, it said i should use 0.0001 mol dm-3 concentration of phenol. when i made that up yesterday, i was literally putting a few phenol crystals into 2 litres of water. Is that concentrated enough, and will it work? phenol isn't very soluble, so the vast majority of the solution will just be water.
basically, if the phenol doesn't react with free bromine, i cant follow the reaction, its too fast.
sorry for the long winded post, probably didn't need all that
