Hi, is anyone else staying in Albion house for nottingham uni in 2022? I’m getting scared because I’ve not heard many good things about it!

Hey,

I am a current 3rd year student at Nottingham. Although I didn't stay in Albion house, one of my course mates lived there and found it fine.
Most self catered halls are pretty much all the same. The tram stop is quite close so its easy to get into town. She also ended up making friends with a lot of people in Broadgate which is only around a 7 min walk away as they also get the tram and are around Beeston.

I would also recommend getting involved in any sports and societies that take your interest. You might get really lucky and get along with everyone in your flat great however there is also the chance that you might not get on great. In either case I think it s good to have your own things going on and that way you won't be relying on your flat only to socialise etc. You will probably find that you are not actually in the accommodation that much as there is always something going on (work or social) to be getting on with.

I would also try and find any facebook groups for you accommodation, course etc as this may put your mind at ease that there are similar people to you out there.

If you have any questions about the uni or anything else just let me know,
Emily

Hi,

I'm currently staying at Albion House. It probably isnt as bad as you've heard.

Pros -

Self Catered.
Centre of Beeston, good for pubs, jobs, shops etc, literally next to Sainsburys, Lidl, 5 mins from Tesco. Good public transport, trams 8 mins away, two busses to centre 4 mins away. The walk to Campus is about 20/25 mins. Much further than many halls on campus, but given so much is online it hasnt really affected me.
The halls are quiet mostly, there isnt a silverfish or pest problem like there usually is in halls, I've only seen about 5.
Its a small hall, during freshers there was lots of hall socialsing to do. Plenty of flat parties, and trips of 30 people to the local spoons (a 5 min walk away).
The kitchens are a very good size, and cleaned to a great standard weekly by the cleaning staff. You have to do the bins but they're right next to the halls entrance so unlike other places, there is no great trek to empty them.

Cons -

It is old, but not so old its a problem. If you dont mind that it seems a bit tired, you'll be fine.
It is a small halls - if like me, you dont end up sticking with the group you first form it can get a bit socially slow.
It is a small halls - we're surrounded by a residentail area. The 'security guard' will be at your flat to stop 'excessive noise' anytime after 10. Gets very annoying.
Big heavy doors to get into the block. You will hear them at all hours.
The windows have anti suicide restrictors on them (even on the ground floor, which also have openable security bars) (unlike halls on campus where you can open a massive window fully, on the 6th floor or something), this means in the summer it can get HOT. Bring a fan. I have mine right by the window to suck air in. But I like a cool room so its a personal thing. Fair warning.

Conclusion

There is a lot to like, the only irritation I have is the distance to campus.

I've had no interaction with people from other halls during freshers - might have been how it played out for me, but distance is a thing. Lots of adjacent halls on campus meant I travelled home a different way etc. Can suck.
Travelling to lectures at 8am, walking, sucks. But stick music in and its alright. You can get the tram or Indigo Bus to the far side of campus. otherwise its a 35/40m walk.

Hope that helps

Hey! I've gotten an offer for Albion house and have struggled to meet people who are also living there next year. What's your name? where are you from?

oh wow that sounds intense! i haven’t had much luck finding anyone in Albion house, I guess because it’s quite a small accommodation. I’ve tried to find Facebook groups and stuff but no real luck so far. so glad to have found someone because I was half wondering if I’d end up there on my own 😂 x

Same I’ve tried all the group chats and had no success, I’ve heard it’s quite small but I don’t know exactly how small 😂. People may not have applied for accommodation yet or they don’t have the same social media as everyone else! I’m glad to have found at least one other person! Good luck for your exams
