the only break i have ever been on was really because i wasnt entirelysure that breaking up was the right thing to do, but the break proved to me that it was.

We were on a break
Love Friends!

I'd generally say it was at a point where you're unsure of where the relationship's going, and you are experimenting with which feels better.

OR it's where you need a little space from everything, so you're a little stressed out, and you can't deal anything generally, so you're kinda on a break from the relationship until you feel you can deal with it better.

I personally have never taken a break with a boyfriend, but my best friend has a couple of times [different guys]. I think for her she took a break with them because things weren't going so well for her in her life, or bad things had happened in the relationship which she needed to think about etc... unfortunately though, every time she took a break with a guy it ended up with them breaking up completely.

For me though, I don't think I'd ever 'take a break' - it just seems to be a bit of a lame way of eventually breaking up with someone - if you're going to end it, just end it already.

And with breaks you then havre that whole Ross/Rachel thing as to whether you both accept you're on a break, and if there are any rules/limits - some people think it's acceptable to hook up with other people while on abreak from their partners.
to me it would mean "im bored of you, i wannna know whats out there"

that, says to me that there is some trouble in the relationship, and its not working...

its all downhill imho after someone calls for a break

I went on a break and realised I could live without him. So I never really understood the going on a break thing, I think its just a nice way to break up haha. A bit of false hope.
I think it depends on the couple tbh, I mean, some people go on a break 'cause they wanna **** around and still have someone to come back to at the end of it all. Me and my boyfriend went on a break a couple of weeks ago and it was nothing like that at all, we were both just getting a bit stressy with college and just needed a bit of space for a while. We didn't even actually call it a break, it was everyone else who seemed to, we both agreed we didn't wanna break up but just needed space, and everyone was like 'oh a break' which I thought jinxed it really. But it didn't seeing as we're okay now though  So I guess we were still together..we just didn't see each other? hmm.

Ah yeah well finally there is a positive example of something like it lol.
Glad it worked out for you!
I think it's really just a way to sort your head out for a little while. From what few I've seen, it tends to either split up the relationship or make it a lot better, so at least it appears to be some sort of turning point. One of my close friends has just had a break with her boyfriend, and I think it did them the world of good. She was yelling at him a lot, and generally not behaving so well, and he was really mostly just putting up with it. Having some time apart (they're LDR, so that wasn't hard!) made her appreciate him a lot more.

I did that.
Hmm...
I went off with another guy for 2 weeks, so I went into an open relationship/break with my BF.
it was very complicated.

siasiasia - is the reason you have a picture of the girl from skins because you really like her?
impossible!

lol wooo:woo: I'm still quite chuft actually 'cause I'm sad like that. Every other time I've heard of it happening [with friends of mine and stuff] they've epically failed, so I don't think they work with the majority of the time, and in that sense, agree with the general consensus of this thread :p:

I'd rather be headbutted in the testicles by a mad goat than "go on a break".

To me, going on a break is when youre still together but youre just taking time apart from each other - not to go off with other people, or 'cheat' on them but to reflect on why youre on a break and make you appreciate it.
I regard going on a break as a last-ditch effort to save a relationship that can't be saved by any method that involves you staying together. I've never seen it actually save the relationship because, once they're actually away from their partner, one of the two has always decided not to go back. I don't think it's a coincidence that the one who leaves is always the one who wanted the break in the first place.

It has to be said though that I'm looking at this from the perspective of a long-term relationship, living with my boyfriend. Taking a break is obviously a much bigger deal in that situation than if you see your boyfriend twice a week, say, if only because of the practical issues that would come up.
I've been with my boyfriend since I was 16 and so far this is our third break (I'm 19 now). The thing is each time we went on a break we came back loving each other even more. I'm finding it extremely difficul though and there are days when I can't even get out of bed. I know it's the best for us and the time apart will help me to focus on my schoolwork and other aspects of life. I will date and learn from those experiences. Because we're still young we're still growing so in reality I'd rather hurt now than later on in life. A break is a good thing in the end I feel just make sure it's on good terms.
Going on a break is pretty much a futile attempt to hold together a relationship that has failed. They almost always end in a break-up, even when people get back together after them their relationship is crap for a while and then ends at a later date.
I've never seen a break do anything positive for a relationship. It's just a way of ending it, or for someone to say they are having doubts without having to finish it officially.

My cousin and her boyfriend actually split for a couple of months and then realised that they wanted to be together. In my eyes that's a lot better than a break.

This!

The thing is, I think often people do it with good intentions i.e. to say how they feel without the person, to see if their feelings get stronger etc. But often it makes the eyes wonder, or you just realise you are better off apart. So, in the end, break = break up. It is just giving false hope.
