What to consider when choosing a University

Making sure that you pick the right university for you can be hard, right? Aside from the course, there are so many other things to consider, to ensure that you’re going to be happy and comfortable for the next three years.

So we thought we’d come up with a list of some of the most important things to think about, as you prepare to choose your Firm and Insurance choice universities!

1. Course facilities Researching the content of the course you want to study is super important, we all know. But another thing to look into includes the university’s facilities. As you move towards your third year in university, and your dissertation, you get to have a lot more freedom over what you want to focus on. So checking that the university has the right facilities to suit your needs is always a must.

2. Distance from home Most people decide to move away from home when they go to university, to stay in student accommodation. This can be a great experience, but occasionally it can be lovely to go home for a weekend (to get a cooked dinner and get that washing done 😉). When looking at universities, always check the distance from home, and whether you’d be able to travel back easily, should you want to.

3. Cost of living Leicester was recently voted as one of the most affordable student cities to live in, so it’s no wonder we recommend doing your research into this! You’ll want to look at things like the cost of accommodation, bills, any travel costs, and perhaps the cost of any activities that you like to do for fun!

4. Things to do When taking a break from your studies there will always be something that you turn to first. Cinema? Crazy golf? Shopping? Always look at the location in which a university is in, to make sure that you’ll have plenty to keep you occupied. Some people prefer a quiet campus university, which is great! Others prefer to have the option of going into the local town or city, for something to do.

5. Atmosphere You can take a look at a university online and think it sounds great, but when you visit it just doesn’t feel right! That’s how you’ll know whether a university is going to suit you. We would always recommend visiting any universities that you are considering. You’ll often find that one will stick out more than the others, which will make your decision much easier.

Has anyone else got any suggestions to add to this list? Let us know!

Hi there,

These are really great points, and definitely were all the things I considered when thinking about which University I wanted to go to!

Similar to Atmosphere, I think the town / city of where your University is located is so important and something that was not stressed to me enough when I started University! You spend a lot of time outside campus, or in the town whether it be shopping or socialising, so feeling comfortable in a particular town and city is so important!

Great list! :yy:
