this is a stupid question but the prospectus refers to thea academic family thing as a "spontaneous tradition" so how does a first year who doesn't even know any other freshers get a 3rd/4th year parent? Is this only really for people who know others in St Andrews? I'm confused!

-thanks-

Third and Fourth years will often be on the look out for bejant/ines (first years) to adopt. It's a popular tradition which most students want to be part of so join a few societies, chat at hall dinners and you should soon find like-minded seniors.

Heya

It isn't really hard to find them- I found mine in the pub when we just started chatting. They will be on the look out for you. Otherwise there is the orphans bop where all unadopted children and prospective parents go. It isn't really something to worry about.

I loved raisin sunday/monday- twas great

Yep, I found there were quite a lot of of opportunities and people were keen to adopt. Also, don't worry if you only get one parent or none to start with cos you won't be the only one and many adoptions happen after the first week, after you get to know ppl better. It's definitely not necessary to accept the first offer that comes along although u easily can do. Obviously, it's nice to be in an academic family but it's just one sense of belonging among many (like hall, societies, academic department).
