Seriously though, its a start, especially if you dont already know the girl to talk to and you're a bit shy (which presumably you are seeing as you're asking us!).

If you get a frosty reception at this stage it's probably a sign to forget about it and move on.

For the love of god, don't do that.

Just think of something you could say to her that's not a) fake, b) a lie or c) orchestrated completely. Is she wearing some kind of unusual clothing/jewellery? Is she wearing something that identifies her as a member of an unusual club/society? Did you overhear something provocative/interesting she said? Basically, all you need is some sort of ice breaker that isn't corny or creepy, probably something innocuous and unrelated to the fact that you find her attractive enough to want to approach her. If you do things right, you should be able to develop things the way you want. Of course, there's no guarantees.

Also, remember that waiting to be served at the counter of a bar is pretty much one of the only places where it's completely acceptable to talk to strangers. Take advantage of this wherever possible.
